Swipe for details… Join us 3pm – 5pm on Saturday 10 October at Civic Art Bureau for the opening of THIRTY by Hands On Studio. This exhibition is a part of the 30th anniversary of Hands On Studio, celebrating three decades of artistic practice, community engagement and cultural contribution by artists with disability. Presented at the Civic Art Bureau in Canberra, the exhibition provides an opportunity to consider the development of Hands On Studio and its significance within the broader context of disability arts and contemporary creative practice. Drawing on the studio’s extensive history, the exhibition brings together still and moving images, artworks, archival material and other forms of documentation to examine the people, practices, relationships and experiences that have shaped Hands On Studio over the past 30 years. Collectively, these materials provide insight into the evolution of the studio, while foregrounding the diverse artistic voices and perspectives of its artists. Join us from 4pm Sunday 11 October at Bookrunner to celebrate a new body of work by Tom Campbell for the 2026 Canberra Art Biennial, titled there is no mountain. Tom’s 2026 Biennial work considers architectures of language and translation, in particular how language functions as a technology. Presented at Bookrunner, a context where texts arrive and depart, writers are pressed up against each other and multiple concurrent times exist together, Tom’s work seeks to open up spaces for experiencing multiple conflicting temporalities simultaneously, and gestures to ideas of how we come to know things, what remains unknowable, and what gets lost or transformed in translation. The work was developed while Tom was in Taiwan and Sabah, Malaysia, researching histories of language exchange and reconnecting with his mother’s homeland. Tom wishes to thank his grandfather, Datuk Richard Maning and Yu-Ying Chuang for providing translations of his poems suddenly you become strangers and a book about fighting.

⋆˚࿔ Artist Spotlight: Tom Campbell .𖥔 ݁ ˖ִ🛸༄˖°. Know Thy Neighbour #4 artist Tom Campbell is starting their residency this week! In partnership with City of Vincent, Tom will explore gesture and tension across various forms of practice (street dance, poetry) and research an embodied vocabulary of tension through engagement with other street dancers and artists. He will be researching how this vocabulary can be understood, documented and learned, and look to develop a set of materials that might enable interested parties to creatively unpick tensions in their own lives. Tom Campbell is a poet and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores muscle memories across histories, with a particular interest in the ways language, knowledge and culture are transferred across time and space. He is interested in time and language as malleable materials, open to endless stretching, compressing, embedding and reconfiguration. Read more about Tom via link in bio’s ‘KTN#4: Gestures’. Danisa the Serpent @serpentesssss_ is an Indo-Indian movement artist, drag performer, and ballroom community organiser based in Boorloo/Perth. Performing since 2020, they have appeared at festivals, drag, burlesque, and ballroom events across Australia, including Perth and Adelaide Fringe. A former member of the Kiki House of Silky and the international Mainstream House of Gorgeous Gucci, Danisa has received multiple ballroom performance awards, was named Best New Drag Talent at the 2021 Proud Awards, and is a cast member of the Martin Sims Award-winning Fringe production Ginava’s Messy Friends. With a background in movement and ballroom culture, they bring extensive performance and community experience to the dance floor. Originating from queer Black and Latinx folks in the LA gay disco clubs of the 1970’s, whacking/waacking features striking poses, strong ‘whacks’ and signature fast arm movements to multi-layered disco tracks. The originators found freedom and joy in the clubs as they danced to each layer of music depicting comic superheroes, martial artists, black & white movie stars, disco divas, and the drama of it all. Pioneered by Renee Russo @waackinginperth in Boorloo, and organised by Rin & Izy today, please welcome the Perth waacking community: Naz, Jasmine, Rin, Tom, Izy and Jimin

#35mm - just mumbling - ‘I find them nice to look at. Don’t you reckon that’s how memories stick around? Blurred, blocked, washed, faded, you could only ever remember parts of it.’ She taught me how to appreciate overexposed photos. I love them still, but she is long gone. “She was there already,” I keep scores between us still—this is how you are sticking around. - The other day when I was driving tree shadows brushed on car windows. How many stories begin with ‘in the shadow …’ do you reckon? If tree had a book written about them, how much of it lives in that back-lit intersection? - It’s hard to believe, but this one is a #doubleexposure

This is my first time being an artist-in-residence (and I will do everything I can to make sure that it won’t be my last!). I arrived at Treasure Hill Artist Village with almost zero expectation, or, if I have to be precise, I had no idea what to expect besides working on my project as I had promised in the proposal. But it turned out that this residency, for me, was like a summer camp when you were young: everything felt new, you’ve made some really good friends, and then you started being attached to people, places, and things. Then it came to an end. And you could feel a hollow, inexplicable emptiness inside you. But I want to think of it like how you have shed your old self, and have moved on as a different person than the one who came here. I’m so sure that when I look back at this time, I will think of this residency as one of the most pivotal periods of my life. I’m glad we met, and I hope, with all my heart, that we will meet again.
