I’m incredibly grateful to @lasvegasweekly for taking the time to share my story. A special thank you to Amber Sampson for such a thoughtful interview and Christopher DeVargas for the fantastic photography.

One of the things I talked about in this interview is how difficult it can be to pursue a dream when you’ve never personally known anyone who’s accomplished what you’re trying to do. That’s why the people who encourage, challenge, and believe in us matter so much.

I want to give a special thank you to Professor Keith Strasbaugh at @csn.film and Professor @blevner at @unlvfilm . Both have had a tremendous influence on me as an artist. They’ve challenged me to become a better storyteller while reminding me that growth doesn’t have to come at the expense of the artist.

Thank you to @smccain whose remarkable life and nearly two decades of friendship continue to inspire me. To Gabi Mykal and my fellow filmmakers from the Tyler Perry Studios Dream Collective, thank you for reminding me how powerful it is to be surrounded by people who are just as passionate about storytelling as I am.

I’m also incredibly thankful for the opportunities and communities I’ve found through @ridebackrise, the @wgfoundation Veterans Writing Project, Tyler Perry Studios, CSN, and UNLV.

And to my family, especially my uncle, who supported my dreams long before there were awards or headlines, thank you. I haven’t forgotten what you’ve done for me.

Finally, to my son, who gives everything I’m working toward a much deeper meaning: I hope that one day you’ll look at my journey and understand that your dreams are never too big to pursue.

I still have so much to learn and so much I want to accomplish. But I’m enjoying the journey, and I’m grateful I don’t have to make it alone.

A milestone to wrap principal photography on my first feature!

When I worked at the DGA for 10 years, I’d see all of these amazing talented directors come in and talk about their craft. Their love for story, technicality and performance always left me in awe because I could see in their eyes and how they spoke that they loved creating with all of their hearts. I wanted to be a version of that for myself, unleash all of the vision and creativity swirling in my body since I was a little girl, but with nobody in my direct orbit in this career path, I had to find my own way.

During that time I worked 50+ hours a week at the day job to afford a life in LA while making art on the weekends. After a few web series and short films, I was fortunate enough to meet @maryloubelli who said “say you’re a director.” “I am a director,” I repeated. That was the first step: speaking it into existence. Along the way exceptional directors and creators @gregyaitanes @gpbmadeit were kind enough to watch my earliest works, @gberlanti encouraged me to keep on making new work and @brooneydirector gave me a call that changed everything. She took me under her wing on Criminal Minds and through an intensive, allowed me to fully blossom. I cannot thank these mentors enough for pouring into me and impacting me by always modeling that you can be exceptional at your work while also being a kind, generous human being! ✨
