The legendary MCI D4000s were the very first MCIs delivered to CATS back in 2001. Powered by bulletproof Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines paired with Allison B500R transmissions, they have shown lasting quality over thousands and thousands of miles.

Over the last quarter century, they’ve managed to outlast 24 different generations of CATS buses. Today, half of the 10 original units (502, 505, 507, 509, and 510) are still going strong, hauling commuters in and out of Uptown Charlotte every single day.

• Charlotte Future Rapid Transit Network •

This new schematic diagram shows the future of rapid transit in Charlotte, North Carolina.
As one of the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the American South, the “Queen City” is planning a major expansion of its transit infrastructure to keep pace with sustained population growth and increasing travel demand.

Already in service:
• Gold Line streetcar: French St ↔ Sunnyside Ave – 4 miles, 17 stations
• Blue Line light rail: UNC Charlotte Main ↔ I-485/South Blvd – 19.3 miles, 26 stations

On the way:
• Gold Line extension: northward from French St to Rosa Parks Place CTC, and eastward from Sunnyside Ave to Eastland CTC, via a new interchange at Charlotte Gateway Station (Amtrak/Greyhound).
Planned frequency: every 15 minutes.

• Blue Line extension: southward from I-485/South Blvd to Carolina Place and Community House Rd.
Planned frequency: every 10 minutes peak / 15 minutes off-peak.

• Silver Line: new 29-mile light rail service linking Belmont to Indian Trail through Uptown Charlotte, providing direct access to Douglas International Airport and Charlotte Gateway Station.
Planned frequency: every 10 minutes peak / 15–20 minutes off-peak and weekends.

• Red Line: new 25-mile commuter rail service running along the existing Norfolk Southern O-line freight corridor, connecting Charlotte Gateway Station to destinations across Mecklenburg County and as far as Mount Mourne.
Planned frequency: every 30 minutes peak / 60 minutes off-peak and weekends.

According to current official plans, these extensions and new services are expected to be delivered progressively by 2055. As with any long-term transportation programme, the scope, timelines, and operational details remain subject to change.

I designed this schematic in the style of strip maps you often see posted in train carriages.
Keep in mind that this kind of representation heavily distorts proportions, distances, and orientation to mainly focus on network connectivity.

It’s a beautiful fall morning in @southendclt
- Did You Know? -
🚈 Charlotte’s Rail Trail follows the historic railroad corridor that helped turn South End into an industrial hub in the late 1800s. Today, that same corridor is home to the @ridecats LYNX Blue Line, connecting South End to Uptown!

A year ago, voters said yes to transit through the one cent sales tax.

Park(ing) Day 2026 was a blast! Every parklet was built with creativity, whimsy, and fun. Staff, friends, and strangers came together to play games, create art, eat snacks, and discuss the value of people-centered spaces. The parking takeover took place on September 18th on Tryon Street. @uptown.clt brought yard games and live music to the Wells Fargo Plaza, spreading the joy for participants and passersby.

🙌 We are grateful to our partners and the vendors who came out to support this year!

💡We hope this inspires you to seek out more ways to make cities and spaces that can be shared by all and look forward to seeing what the future holds!
