The older I get, the less I chase money and the more I chase memories.

My daughter turned 12 on June 20.

When I asked her what she wanted for her birthday, she didn’t ask for clothes, shoes, or the newest phone. She told us to spend time with her family because we gave her everything she wanted.

For the last two years, she’s been talking about @Rodwave concert. The first year, we couldn’t make it happen. Between her school schedule, the programs she was involved in, and my speaking schedule, life simply got in the way.

This year, I looked at things differently.

I’ve learned that money comes and goes. Opportunities come and go. But time with the people you love is something you never get back.

So instead of buying another gift that would eventually be forgotten, I bought us tickets to see @RodWave together.

I waited until after her band concert to tell her.

I had my assistant face-time her and share her screen, Kaidyn looked back at me with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen.

Then she said four words that completely broke me.

You’re the best dad ever.

I had to fight back tears.

Not because of the concert.

Because those four words meant so much more.

I grew up without my father. I’ve spent a lot of my life wondering if I was getting this whole dad thing right.

A few years ago, before my daughter and I started building our owm business together, she told me something that stuck with me. She felt like I chose my job over her.

She wasn’t trying to hurt me.

She was telling me what she needed.

From that day forward, I promised myself I would build a life where she never had to compete with my career for my attention.

So when she said, You’re the best dad ever, I didn’t hear four words.

I heard healing.

I heard growth.

I heard that the little boy who grew up without a father was becoming the father he always wished he had.

That’s the kind of wealth I’m chasing now.

Not just money.

Memories.

Because one day she won’t remember every gift I bought her.

But she’ll remember how I made her feel.
