Thank you, Oharano. Until we meet again! 🍃🇯🇵

As my residency at Oharano Studio Gallery comes to an end, I leave with a heart full of gratitude, new discoveries and precious memories.

A heartfelt thank you to @oharanoart_residency and Sangsun Bae, my host, for making this residency and my Open Studio possible.

To @chie8zhirong0214, for all your practical help and care behind the scenes, and @sumichan_kusakabe, for the beautiful plants and delicious treats that enriched my days.

Thank you to my fellow resident @stevenhma.studio for sharing the first part of this journey, and to @rin_aroma.labo, my fellow scent enthusiast, for sharing our love of aroma and plants.

Thanks to @ridong39 for telling me about the kaya event, @yuri_momo_chan for taking me to the botanical gardens, and @takahashi_shuji_565 for the spontaneous tour of Daitoku-ji.

To @oto.yohaku (Muraki) and @hazamabutoh (Gerard), thank you for the spontaneous dance performance! And to Milan, @himitsu_gekijo_milanerie for bringing dance and joy to my Open Studio. 💃

Thank you to my lovely neighbour @akihos13 for the delicious treats and beautiful cedarwood chopsticks, and to @cosmomasako for inviting me to the special event.🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
And thank you to @shoyeido_incense
for your time and special visit at your beautiful company! ✨✨✨✨✨✨And a big thank you to the local bike shop for making it possible to explore Oharano so comfortably!🚲

To everyone who shared plants, stories, knowledge and memories, and to everyone who visited my Open Studio: I could not have realised Field of Living Impressions of Oharano without your kindness, generosity and support. You have all become part of my work and my memories of Japan.

Through plants, scent and stories, we created connections across cultures. I leave with deep gratitude and hope to meet again.

ありがとうございました — Thank you all! また会いましょう 🌿

Yesterday I experienced something very special at Ōtoshi Shrine in Oharano.

The local community came together to press oil from the seeds of the sacred kaya tree, the Japanese nutmeg-yew (Torreya nucifera). The oil will be used to light the sacred lanterns at the shrine during the autumn celebrations beginning on 17 October.

The shrine is known as Kaya Daimyōjin, and the surrounding grove as Kaya no Mori; the Forest of Kaya. The connection between tree, fragrance, oil, light, ritual and community felt deeply meaningful to me. A beautiful example of how scent, plants and cultural memory can remain alive through people who care for a place and its traditions.

My heartfelt gratitude to Rev. Keisuke Arimochi, Chief Priest of Ōtoshi Shrine, for welcoming me so warmly and, especially, for allowing me to take a few small branches from the kaya tree to bring into my own research through eco-printing. I feel deeply honoured to carry a small trace of this ancient tree and its story into my work.

And what a lovely surprise to meet my fragrant colleague Charko there, together with Kae-san, who represents @rin_aroma.labo , the organisation that organised this wonderful oil-pressing event. It was so special to meet them again through this beautiful gathering.

This residency in Oharano studio in Japan is bringing me so many unexpected encounters, connections and stories of scent. I feel incredibly grateful for all these living threads that are beginning to weave themselves into my work.
