#LaHanauEa I would like to propose that January 8 be declared Unlicensed Traditional & Spiritual Midwife Day, aka Lā Hānau Ea. Any opposed? This is in honor of the Heavenly Birthday of this amazing, badass, relentlessly traditional midwife, who, more than any person on Oʻahu (and if I am wrong please correct me, but I really do not think so) helped to revive traditional birth practices, including Kanaka traditions, from 4 generations of systemic decimation via regulation and medical pressure, simply by encouraging and supporting (like seriously supporting, through decades of incredibly hard and often unpaid work) birthing people to revive and exact their ancestral traditions without fear or submission to colonial medical mindf*ck*. Medra stood against State regulation of traditional midwives 100%. She disagreed with many practices, but NEVER threw any other midwife under the State bus — a tradition that I suggest we all uphold. She was my mentor, teacher and midwife supreme. She encouraged me to do my births in whatever way I was guided by my ancestors and the knowledge I could piece together from my kupuna, and she stood back unless needed. THAT is a traditional midwife. A true ally, who did not push her own traditions on me or any of the other Kanaka who have become the generation to normalize and revitalize the traditions of our kupuna so that others may learn without fear, repression, or all the incredible bs that she had to endure. Her and others like her, on other islands. Any opposed? Medra bedecked in lei, sitting in chair at her honoring ceremony
