Mr. G and Sons: An exploration of my Grandfather’s Legacy
(Lengthy description ahead)

I’ve been thinking a lot about my Grandpa (Mr. G) recently, and the legacy he left behind. It continues to grow in my mind, especially as I get older and life starts to take root.

In that vein, I felt a desire to share about my senior thesis. Yes, it’s been almost 2 years now since my senior project (sproj), but life takes time. Grief takes time.

My sproj was a documentary theatre piece that I wrote, co-directed, co-choreographed, and performed. It was created through a collection of interviews from friends, family, and my grandfather himself. I used those interviews to form a script that explored the idea of legacy. The show plays between two realities: The heightened, overly fantastical, world of how I imagined my grandfather’s idealized legacy vs the reality of how his friends and family viewed his life.

This piece was never a goodbye, but rather a form of “see you later”. It was an ode to my grandfather and the legacy he has gifted my family. This piece was my way of showing him that no matter how significantly life will change after he passed away, his legacy and light will remain through the people whose lives he touched. Life has changed, but his light remained.

I will be forever grateful that my grandfather was able to attend, and will never forget the smile on his face when we took that final bow. That moment lives so close to my heart, and I owe so much gratitude to so many people who supported me through the process.

A huge thank you to my family for taking the time to participate in these interviews, and for always showing up to support. You’ll never know how much I love every one of you. To my cohort, my cast and friends … my chosen family. This process would never have happened without your joy, light, support, and genius. Thank you for your attentiveness and care toward my family, especially my grandfather. A massive thank you to my advisors Jonathan Rosenberg and Lindsey Liberatore. Your patience, confidence, and care will never be forgotten. None of this would have come to fruition without your guidance.
