CASTING ANNOUNCEMENT | CARMEN

Joburg Ballet is proud to announce the casting for the full season of Carmen, opening at Joburg Theatre on 25th September and the State Theatre on 24th October.

Veronica Paeper’s dramatic ballet classic, Carmen, returns to the Joburg Theatre stage as part of Joburg Ballet’s 25th Anniversary Season. This sizzling production brings one of the world’s most famous stories of passion, jealousy and fate vividly to life through dance.
Set to the unforgettable music of Georges Bizet, Carmen: The Ballet follows the fiery and free-spirited Carmen, whose irresistible allure draws the soldier Don José into a dangerous world of desire, obsession and betrayal. When Carmen’s affections turn to the glamorous bullfighter Escamillo, Don José’s love darkens into jealousy, setting the scene for a devastating final encounter.

A powerful fusion of classical ballet, theatrical storytelling and Spanish-inspired drama, Paeper’s Carmen is a thrilling portrait of a woman who refuses to be owned, and of the passions that consume those who try to possess her.

Rest in peace, our dear friend Ken.

The ballet community has lost a truly wonderful man. Your passion for both dance and photography was something you shared so generously, capturing countless beautiful moments that will now live on because of your gift.

Your photographs did far more than document performances—they preserved memories, celebrated artists, and allowed audiences to relive the magic long after the curtain had fallen.

The theatre will feel a little quieter, and the audience a little emptier, without your familiar presence behind the camera. But your legacy will live on through the extraordinary collection of moments you so lovingly captured.

Thank you, Ken, for your kindness, your unwavering support of the arts, and for all that you gave so freely. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Our heartfelt condolences go to your family, friends, and all those whose lives you touched.

With love and sympathy,
Friends of the Ballet
