Amaranthus seeds (commonly known as Amaranth) are small, starchy seeds from the Amaranthus plant. (Mullan cheera)

Although often called a grain, they are technically a pseudocereal, similar to quinoa or buckwheat, because they are seeds used and consumed like traditional cereal grains. In India, they are popularly known as Rajgira or Ramdana.

Health Benefits of Amaranth Seeds
Amaranth is considered a "superfood" due to its dense concentration of nutrients and bioactive compounds.

Complete Plant-Based Protein: It is one of the rare plant sources that contains all nine essential amino acids, including lysine, which is typically missing from most other grains. This makes it excellent for muscle repair, recovery, and overall growth.

Naturally Gluten-Free: It is a safe and nutritious alternative for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
Heart Health & Cholesterol Management: Rich in dietary fiber and phytosterols, amaranth can help lower "bad" LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while regulating blood pressure through its high potassium content.
Bone Strength: It is exceptionally high in bone-building minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. It contains significantly more calcium than most other grains like wheat or rice.

Digestive Health: The high fiber content (both soluble and insoluble) promotes regular bowel movements, prevents constipation, and supports a healthy gut microbiome by acting as a prebiotic.

Anti-Inflammatory & Antioxidant Properties: It contains high levels of phenolic acids and antioxidants like squalene, which help protect cells from oxidative stress and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

Weight Management: Its combination of high protein and fiber promotes satiety (the feeling of fullness), which can help reduce appetite and overall calorie intake.
Anemia Prevention: Amaranth is a rich source of iron, containing more iron per serving than many other grains and even

this was a difficult challenge in our lives as birders. societies don't like #pigeons #nesting in flats. Of course we can understand the health concerns and all of that....

we couldn't use the balcony ever since they nested..and we of all people, we, had great difficulty in accepting them as our co existers!!

we have decided to put nets on our balcony once these fly off!

A mythological bird..

According to legend the arrival of Goddess Durga back to her home is informed, to her husband Lord Shiva, by a Neelkantha Bird.

The Indian roller is often associated with Lord Shiva because both the bird and the god have blue throats. It is said that Lord Shiva drank poison during Sagar Manthan, which turned his throat blue...
