It’s new. It feels familiar. We’d rather not explain ourselves just yet.

Factory People and Ballroom Blitz have finally found an excuse to get together. Jade and Rita are handling the music.

You might remember how the rest works.

@SceneNoise #NoiseFeatures: As part of a collaboration with Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) ahead of this year’s edition, October 21st–25th, SceneNoise presents CROSSFADE, a five-part editorial series exploring the histories, challenges and evolving identities of electronic music across MENA through the people who have shaped each local scene.

The third episode turns to Lebanon, where electronic music has developed alongside decades of political and economic instability, repeatedly adapting as circumstances threaten to bring its nightlife to a halt.

For decades, Beirut has occupied a peculiar position within the region’s nightlife landscape. Its club culture has survived war, political instability, economic collapse, a devastating port explosion and, more recently, another period of Israeli attacks on the south of the country. Yet each rupture has been followed by another generation of artists, promoters and communities finding new ways to gather.

On a humid Friday night in Beirut’s Gemmayze district during the early 2010s, stepping into a dimly lit, speakeasy-like bar felt less like going out and more like entering an unwritten consensus. The state power grid would already be failing, forcing venues to run on private diesel generators, but inside, no one was looking at the ceiling lights. They were listening to a sound that had yet to find a permanent address in the city.

Before Beirut became known for monolithic open-air venues and internationally touring DJs and collectives, its electronic scene was a collection of micro-communities scattered across tight basements and pop-up parties. Discovering dance music in Lebanon was not about algorithms; it was an intimate initiation shaped by small circles of selectors, neighbourhoods, friends and a shared hunger for something beyond commercial radio.
