Two days ago, my sister came home from Everest, and I still struggle to find the words to describe what I feel.

For months, we carried hope, fear, prayers, and dreams in our hearts. Seeing her return safely was more emotional than I can ever explain. Her historic achievement fills us with pride, but nothing compares to the joy of having her back with us.

The bond of sisterhood is unlike any other. We have shared a lifetime of memories, laughter, challenges, and dreams. Watching her stand on the roof of the world was inspiring, but watching her walk back into our lives was priceless.

My brave sister you have made our family happier than words can express. You didn’t just climb a mountain—you gave us moments we will cherish forever and a story that will inspire generations to come.

We are endlessly proud of you, and our hearts are full knowing you are home. ❤️🏔️

One of the greatest gifts we can give another person is the opportunity to be heard.

At the Everest Summiteers Summit in Kathmandu, I had the privilege of joining a panel on Women in Mountaineering: Safety, Dignity and Equal Opportunity alongside some incredible women from around the world.

During the discussion, I spoke about something I continue to notice both in the mountains and in everyday life.

Many women have a voice, but not always the space to use it.

Sometimes they are interrupted.
Sometimes spoken over.
Sometimes they doubt themselves before they even begin.

If we want to see more women in the mountains, leadership positions, business and adventure, we need to create environments where they feel supported to speak, contribute and be heard.

That support can come from organisations, communities, families, partners and friends.

Because when someone feels seen, heard and believed in, it becomes much easier for them to pursue the dreams that matter to them.

Thank you to Everest Alliance Nepal for bringing together mountaineers from around the world to discuss the future of the Himalaya and the role we can all play in creating a stronger and more inclusive mountain community.

“I felt so powerful at the summit.”

River Ahmad @riverbeyondsummits has survived what many could not imagine. Born in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, she narrowly escaped a Taliban attack as a young woman, at one point covering herself in menstrual blood to avoid detection.

Now based in Australia, she has turned that trauma into resilience — becoming the first Afghan woman to summit Mount Everest. River says the climb was not just personal, but a mission to spotlight the suffering of women and girls under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

A journey built on courage, resilience and hope for millions who dare to dream. After surviving war and persecution in Afghanistan due to her advocacy for women’s rights, River escaped to Australia and set her sights on achieving the impossible — becoming the first Afghan woman to summit Mount Everest.

This just might be one of the most 🤯 stories I have heard of survival. @riverbeyondsummits used her own period blood to cover herself & play dead to survive a Taliban attack & now she’s going for the summit of Mt Everest to raise awareness for Afghan women and girls rights.

She’s alive due to sheer grit and quick thinking. When she graduated high school she begged and begged her father to let her go to Kabul for university. She sobbed for two weeks until he finally relented and gave her a bit of money. She was the only female on the bus.

Halfway to Kabul the bus was stopped by the Taliban who opened fire. River was on her period. She smeared her blood all over her face and pretended she had been killed. She could hear the Taliban gunmen talking about her, how they had killed a “prostitute”.

She studied journalism and then got a masters in international relations.

She left Afghanistan in 2019 for Australia. She goes by River now because as she told me “My philosophy behind river is to flow like a river, non stop able”

Also she says after starting a new life & the death of her brother she felt as of her old name, Zakia (which means river) carried too much trauma.
