🥬✨ THE BIG VEGGIE TAKEOVER: AN ODE TO CELERY

Anyone who’s ever been in a kitchen with me knows my passion for celery and here she is on my desk, growing in the moonlight, a writer’s muse.

As a former drama teacher specialising in neurodiversity—with a natural leaning toward animism—I’ve always given ingredients a distinct character.

(For those curious, you can find the pack of recipe playing cards illustrated by @jemimahastingss at the back of my book!)

💚 Meet Celery. She’s my maternal treasure. Glistening pale yet sharp lime green, watery yet strong, celery—like many a woman—gets better with age. She is an eminently practical, reliable, and humble soul.

She easily melts into the background of a pot, simply making everyone else feel good about themselves. She’s the ultimate support system: stable, secure, and full of unconditional love.

🌱 The Gift That Keeps on Giving. I love popping celery roots into a saucer of water, watching fresh green shoots push into the light. To me, she is a symbol of Mother Earth’s undaunted, generous gift of life. A beautiful reminder that we already have within us everything we need to grow.

🌕 Connection & Food Security. When you shop at a farmer’s market like @thesussexpeasant or unpack an ethical organic box from a team like @angmeringvillagegreens or @riverford nourishment begins right there in the real exchange. It connects us back to the soil, the fields, and the people who grow our food with deep respect.

Thank you to @jcraneburrows for creating this space to celebrate our food systems

Our organic veg box delivery shows the signs of the season with beautiful squashes, looking good enough to decorate the windowsill whilst we decide on recipes.

Any suggestions?

August Special Drops:

🕯️ Witchy Candle Cake: a 4-inch, 4 layer cardamom-cinnamon and white chocolate cake that you can actually light up while reciting your witchy incantations 🧙‍♀️

🎃 Autumnal Pumpkin Cupcakes: these aren’t your standard “Pumpkin Spice” cupcakes, they’re filled with roasted organic Crown Prince Squash from @riverford - and a lot of it! Topped with a not-too-sweet cream cheese frosting.

Home Stretch Bakes is a micro-bakery that exists to bring old-fashioned baking, with whole ingredients — organic and seasonal — to you.
True and proper sourdough is our forte but every once in a while, we do a limited special drop that celebrates the best of the season.

Our Witchy Candle Cake is only available for this Saturday, 31-Oct, on Hallowe’en.
Our Autumnal Pumpkin Cupcakes are available this Saturday and, only once more, next Friday the 6-Nov.

Orders are filling up fast so get yours in before 10AM on the Wednesday before delivery.

We've both been under the weather this week so easy cook comfort food was needed. This Marry Me Cauliflower from @riverford fitted the bill. The cauli is roasted while the sauce is made, with added sweet potatoes and chickpeas for flavour and protein. We had it with toasted sourdough to slurp up the juices. Took about 10 mins for the peeling and chopping then 30 mins mainly hands off cooking.

Fish also for dinner, because fish is just great. Fried sea bass with carrot salad à la grecque with only salt, olive oil and lemon. Pickles and a leftover flatbread. @riverford potatoes in the oven, skin on.

This is my second batch of @riverford squash soup. It’s such a depth of flavour. Subtle spices from the paprika cumin & harrissa…. It is simply delicious! #squashsoup #riverfordrecipes #autumncomfortfood

This past week's #lowcarb #workday #lunchbox was @ms.wanton tomato and chicken curry learned from my South Indian Mum in law, and my 6min saltwater spa broccoli and peas, edamame and broadbeans. A great base for saucy dishes instead of rice / noodles / pasta / chappati.

The old school aunties might justifiably tsk, but this helps me steady the blood sugar spikes and 2pm crashes during the week.

Always grateful for all-star produce from @iowtomatoes @riverford @farm_directuk @fosse_meadows . At @ms.wanton the family meal IS the menu, so we're all getting the good stuff!
