Book Review (no spoilers) that none of you need but many of you want (?)

Iron Flame (Fourth Wing Book 2!)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I had anticipated this book ever since finishing the first couple of chapters of Fourth Wing back in the spring and I was delighted by how enthralling and action-packed it was. I'm not going to say much about the plot or any details here but if you comment "I've read this! Send me your thoughts!", I'll DM you all the thoughts I remembered to record while reading and you can relive it with me (even if we've already talked about it!)

This series utterly captivated me this year and I have no regrets about jumping in even if we have to wait another year (or more!) for book 3. The plot points and secrets and past histories uncovered in Iron Flame have kept many of us predicting and guessing at the future of the series since finishing it. I am impressed with @rebeccayarros' immersive writing, ability to create tension, and character building. I loved so many moments in this book and felt a range of emotions too.

I started this on audio since it was readily available when I woke up but I ended up finishing it in print because I couldn't get enough of it. The book itself is beautiful and looks so nice with Fourth Wing 🐉

And thank you @caluyadesign for this awesome freebie book dragon design for Cricut! I loved making this shirt with 3 dragons on it 💚 what do you think?! It was 0 degrees Celsius when we took these pics haha

QOTD: if you could magically develop a special power what would you wish for it to be?! I'd want to teleport I think. So many people I want to hug IRL!

(Thanks to my Iron Flame debrief friends tagged) lol 😂

IRON FLAME by Rebecca Yarros

Spoiler free because I’d never hurt you.

As anticipated new releases go, this one was near the top of my list this year! It’s always a special type of thrill waiting on a book in a series to come out, because you already know and love the characters, you’re probably chatting with friends about what you think might happen, and we are all in the same boat counting down days and hours.

This book was longer than I expected (!) and I kept looking down at my phone while listening and thinking, “How am I only at 26%?!”

I spent as many minutes as I could listening and reading in print at the same time. It’s my favorite way to read if I am truly able to put all other thoughts and distractions away. I think it elevated this one because I just love seeing the names and places and not missing any of the details in those quotes at the beginning of each chapter (same as she did in Fourth Wing).

I’m sure others will have more to say, and this is less of a review than an explanation of my experience (lol y’all already know me) but the vibes are all there, the boom-boom-boom nature of things happening QUICKLY, the battle scenes, the sexual tension and righteous anger, it’s all there. If you loved the first, you’ll love this too!

Thanks to my forever group of babes reading along with me, letting me rage text them, and helping me understand things when I’m like WHAT THE WHAT (which was more than once in here). 😘😘 my dms are always open for chats like these!

Have you gotten your copy of this yet?!

The Seven Year Slip
Ashley Poston
@heyashposton

🍋 Say hello to one of my absolute faves from 2023! I read it in less than 24 hours and am already ready for a reread. Read what makes you happy.

Ashley writes directly to my heart and soul. I devoured The Dead Romantics last fall, and it culminated in an episode of public sobbing whilst grocery shopping. She has a way of capturing such beautiful expressions of human emotion—of love and longing, of loss and grief and anguish, of fiercely loyal friends, and love that is worth waiting for and sacrificing for and fighting for.

This book has an element of magical realism (a magic apartment that can shift time seven years) but to be honest, you almost forget that part because it weaves into the story so seamlessly, that it is not at all a gimmick or struggle with time/space plot holes. It just made sense and made the story all the more beautiful.

Say what you will about The Time Traveller’s Wife, but that book was a very formative read in my teen years, and holds a precious place in my heart. The Seven Year Slip had some tiny pieces of the very best parts of the story, especially when it came to the intersection of Clementine and Iwan’s lives outside of their linear existence.

The book also explores themes of grief and loss and the death of a loved one in a very tender way, but also lends hope when it comes to remembering the best parts of them and the ways in which they help shape our lives.

And, oh my, this romance was just so swoon-worthy. I think I squealed not unlike my 13-year-old-self would have in response to issues of TigerBeat featuring Leo, JTT, and Nick Carter. I think I had to fan myself on occasion because it was just so delightfully perfect.

Ashley’s writing is beautiful and moving, full of excellent tension and chemistry, and her author’s notes are not to be missed!

If you have been thinking of picking this one up… this is your sign! 🍋

What dessert would you choose if a chef could make it to perfection?
I would have a hard time choosing… crème brûlée? Key lime pie? Some sort of decadent chocolate/caramel/sea salt concoction?
