I’m more of an old-school animal lover than a modern-day dog mom. No purse carrying, no mall visits, no fake service vests. But I do believe nothing rounds out a childhood quite like a family dog.
Richard wasn’t immediately convinced—so I tried everything else first: a rabbit (Bugs), guinea pigs, even a gerbil (terrible idea with toddlers). He watched my pet parade silently… then one day, without a word, brought home an 8-week-old Akita. No discussion. Just this perfect, bear-like pup: Miko.
By some cosmic alignment, I showed up that same week with Grace, a 2 lb Yorkie-Shih Tzu mix. Miko was strength. Grace was—well, chaos. They balanced each other beautifully.
Miko was everything a family dog should be: calm, watchful, endlessly loyal. A protector for the kids. A grounding energy for us all.
He recently reached the point where rest became more important than recovery. And in our grief, we’ve been reflecting:
The time he just laid down mid-walk and refused to move.
When he grew bigger than the kids.
When he busted through the invisible fence and half the neighborhood called.
When he brought me a bird—as a gift (ugh).
His absolute joy playing in the snow.
Miko, thank you for all you brought to our family, the childhoods and lives you’ve impacted. We love you. 💔🐾
