🏀 Athlete Highlight 🏀 RJ Barnes @rjjbarnes
Senior - Long Reach HS Basketball
@frostburgmensbasketball commit
1st-Team All-County
2nd-Team All-Met
3rd-Team All-State

I had the opportunity to reconnect with @rjjbarnes last summer and into the fall/winter to prepare for his Senior season at Long Reach HS. I previously coached RJ back in middle school AAU basketball & always knew he would make a name for himself in Howard County and across the state of Maryland when the time came. Although they fell short of a state championship, the boys made a Final 4 appearance & the programs 1st Regional title since 2006.

As you can see, our training focused on a lot of little things that would make RJ & even more dominant basketball player, as well as keeping him mobile & flexible, making sure he would be able to sustain a high performance all season, one in which he rarely was taken off the court. Things like cupping, active/banded mobility, ankle stability & balance, knee ligament strength & health made a huge difference all year - these little things add up in a big way; you may not see it from a physical standpoint, but you do see it in the way he moves, the way he feels on the court, and the fact he remained healthy all winter (minus a few bumps & bruises). Grateful to work with such amazing athletes, but even better people ❤️

Long Reach HS basketball team’s best state championship playoff run in two decades came to a close when they fell to Northeast HS in the semifinals. Congratulations to the players and coaches. And congratulations to the Northeast Eagles. I heard they dedicated their season to a player’s mom who passed away this year. They went on to win the state championship.

To the players..the loss might sting. It will pass. My memories from metropolitan swim championships had highs and lows and a similar sting, missing out on the coveted top 8 in my best event by tenths of a second. What I remember now are the wins, cheering on my teammates, what I learned from the losses and my team cheering me on. What I learned as an athlete stuck with me and helped me in the Marines, in Afghanistan, at home as a father, at work as I used the same drive and passion to hone my craft. These memories will be some of your best, and not many basketball players in the country will have had the opportunity to have ever gone down the championship path as far as you did. You inspired all those who watched the journey, especially kids like my son. We’d be on the drive home from the games and he’d already be reminiscing about the shots, blocks and teamwork and despite it being bedtime, “dad, can we go to the gym and shoot pleeeaase?” You all should be proud, we are proud of you.

There is nothing quite like playoff basketball! Congrats to @longreachbasketball on the hard-fought win last night. And to @rhhs.basketball , what an outstanding season! Both teams left it all out on the court and put on a show for the packed house.

There are a lot of players that get overlooked to play at the next level due to lack of Exposure! As former players an now coaches we need to tap into our resources to help these young men & woman get the looks they need to get a free education and chance to play at the next level!

I want to thank the college coaches that came out to check out this young talented group of guys! Also would like to thank @m.tatum_ for his resources and connections as well! This is only the beginning!!!

As for the players, you all worked hard and put on for yourselves and that’s all you can ask. I’m glad I was able to get some of you some offers and we will continue to build!
