POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Andrés Livov, director, 19.4.1979 - 30.7.2026.

One of the dearest human beings I have met, worked with, and called a friend through decades.

Andrésito, I knew things were bad, when you called me and said you feared we might not be able to make that big movie, which we always wanted to do together. Still, our last conversation was full of serenity.

You said that, in a future existence, we would of course meet again, and certainly recognize each other: “because we will both apply for Berlinale Talents again, no matter in which shape we show up”. We laughed a lot.

It was an unforgettable experience to make our wonderful film “A Place Called Los Pereyra” together, with the help of some of Italy’s finest musicians. As promised, I will try to find a label for a nice re-release of the music to it, which I continue to perform with immense pleasure.

Wherever you are now: we still have our appointment in Toscana, in that area you simply called “Paradise”. I will see you there.

Un abrazo,
Garino

When Adrienne Amato got her first grant for Mbira Talks, I was so young, even by my own perspective at the time. I had never shot anything outside of my own films.

After many setbacks, cancelled visas, major life changes, a move away from Toronto (then back again), with donations of time and gear out of sheer love for the project and people, we found our way to Zimbabwe and into the heart and soul of Moyo to make this circumglobal, decolonial film.

14 years is a long time to keep your heart in a project, yet there’s something so magical about a film that can simmer this long, weaving together eras and epochs.

I cried at the first pluck of the Mbira. My cheeks still ache from the smile I had the whole night. Everything about this film and the people in that room last night reminded me of why we do this.

Congrats, Adrienne and Moyo. You made a film far bigger than us.
