One of the weirder, enigmatic paintings I’ve done, which was a bit of a gamble.
This image was inspired by an old Québécois folktale that I grew up hearing bits and pieces about- it’s called La Chasse Galerie, or bewitched canoe.
🛶
The version I grew up on was a bunch of lumberjacks were working on New Years’ Eve, and were missing “their women” 🫣They knew they couldn’t get back in time for the festivities of the evening, so they made a deal with the devil to fly them in a bewitched canoe over various cities, including Montreal. The deal was “they couldn’t speak the name of the lord, nor touch the church steeples they were flying over, ”.
There are several endings to this tale- sometimes the devil is generous, and they all show back up for work the next day. There’s a version where their driver is so intoxicated he gets in an accident and starts cursing (in Québécois French, most curses actually root from various religious objects, a funny one being a tabernacle), thus breaking the deal with big old bad boy, and they are cursed to fly the canoe throughout hell.
👹
ANYWAY, I’m not a believer, but I can associate wanting to do almost anything to be near those I love. In 2020 my grandfather was, like many, in an assisted living situation, alone for months at a time. It broke our hearts being so far away, watching him have to stay inside alone, lonely, and getting older with each day. I would have done anything to have seen him then. I starting thinking of this folktale as having more truth to it than I had given it credit for most of my life, and thus this painting was created.
I took a chance on putting myself as one of those lumberjacks, but it was a fun experiment that I’ll probably revisit.
“True North” available through @rlsart .
Thanks for the long read 🥸

Months ago a couple fell in love in front of @nathandurfee’s new tree painting during an opening. They talked about all the little birds and picked out their favorites. The painting became part of the first chapter of their story together.

Last night the girlfriend secretly planned a private dinner in the gallery for two. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ They were casually walking by when she said, “Let’s pop in to see if they still have our tree painting?” Awaiting was a magical dinner they’ll never forget. #artlovers
