Who knew that my daughter collecting stamps for the @rnib would lead to us looking through this incredible collection from the 60s and 70s?

A little snapshot of the world in the 60s and 70s, spanning at least 15 countries and territories that I can count… Can you spot a stamp from your country? 👀🌍

As for this collection, I’m now wondering whether some of these might be better treasured by a stamp collector than being donated for just their weight… luckily my daughter has plenty of other, more modern stamps collected by Granny to send in for the @rnib appeal!

Understanding Visual Impairment & Blindness: Daily Life, Technology, and Independence 👁️�
1. It’s a spectrum: Blindness doesn’t always mean total darkness. Many people perceive light, shapes, or movement.
2. Independence is key:
White canes, guide dogs, and tech are tools for independence - not symbols of inability.
1. Many ways to read: Some people use Braille (invented by Louis Braille in 1824), others use screen readers, voice assistants, audiobooks, or large print.
4. Life is full: With accessible design, blind and visually impaired people study, work, travel, and manage daily life independently.
5. Respectful help: Never grab a person, their cane, or their guide dog. Just ask:

A one-of-a-kind space at Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital will provide emotional and practical support to people with sight loss.

Launched by charity RNIB and South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, the dedicated room will be used by two RNIB Eye Care Liaison Officers (ECLOs). Designed with blind and partially sighted people in mind the new room is easier to locate whilst also providing a comfortable and private space.

We spoke with ECLOs Mary Hall and Jo Hewitson, who are both registered severely sight impaired and understand what it means to go through sight loss.

Jo: Because we're now kind of as you walk into the hospital, there's very much a lot of RNIB branding and the ECLO room is right kind of in the centre of the main atrium, which ensures that patients and their families are aware that we're there and it just enables patients to self-refer as well as the referrals coming from the clinical team.

Hywel: Mary and Jo, you're both registered as severely sight impaired. What difference do you think that makes when you're speaking to patients? Mary?

Mary: It makes an immense difference because patients feel that if they're talking to somebody who has a shared lived experience, that person fully understands what they're going through who fully understands the emotional impact that sight loss can have on themselves, family, friend, members and carers.

Jo: There really is kind of a mutual level of understanding and I think because we have lived experience ourselves we can empathise with patients at the deepest level. I also think it's very helpful.

We support across the lifespan, so we support from birth right up until the elderly and particularly when we have children who come in. I think it's really helpful for parents to see an individual who is visually impaired working, just knowing that it is possible to develop that independence with the correct support in place and for them to actually see somebody working and navigating with a guide dog, it just gives them a lot of reassurance and hope really.]

💙💜 Two years apart. Two very different chapters of my life. 💜💙

Two years ago, I had surgery following a retinal detachment. Today marks two years since that surgery, and looking back at these two pictures, there are some obvious changes. I’ve lost weight, and physically I look different.

But there’s one change you can’t necessarily see just by looking at me. I’ve lost the vision in one eye.

October is a time to raise awareness of sight loss and hidden disabilities, and this is something I really want people to understand.
Sight loss doesn’t always mean seeing nothing. I’m registered sight impaired, and although I can still see, my vision is different. Things other people take for granted can be challenging for me. Spotting obstacles, recognising people across the road and navigating everyday situations aren’t always as straightforward as they might seem.
You wouldn’t necessarily know any of that from looking at me.
That’s the thing about hidden disabilities. You can look perfectly fine on the outside, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. You don’t see the adjustments people have to make, the frustrations, or the things they have to learn to do differently.
Two years on, I’m still adapting to life with sight loss. But I’m also pushing myself, working towards my goal of wheeling the London Marathon in 2027 and raising money for RNIB. ❤️

I’m sharing these pictures because awareness matters. Not every disability is visible, and not every person’s experience of sight loss is the same.
So please, be patient, be kind and don’t assume that because someone looks okay, they aren’t facing challenges you can’t see.
You can see the weight I’ve lost. You can’t see the vision I’ve lost. 💙💜

What happens when budding game designers meet our blind and partially sighted gamers for a 48-hour game jam? Games that everyone can play!

This weekend, we partnered with games company Scopely, to invite students from Abertay University to take part in a game jam by building playable games with accessibility baked in from the very first idea. Our blind and partially sighted volunteer gamers were on hand throughout, playtesting early builds and giving designers feedback in real time.

The winning game, Sixth Sense, is a two-player co-op puzzle with a twist: one player can see and guides their partner, who navigates by directional audio alone. Neither has the full picture, so it's all about listening, talking and trust.

Our research shows only 15 per cent of game developers feel they understand the needs of blind and partially sighted players so we're delighted that events like this are helping to change that.
