Was so pleased to quite literally stumble upon this event last night at The Old Hairdressers, beautifully hosted by @rob_churm featuring a mesmerizing showcase of experimental film and sound, some of which @__jennifer__wicks__ @photosonics I think my jaw was on the floor the entire time. So inspiring. Thank you Rob, I hope this happens again.

Sat 21st Nov: Posuposu Otani, Minimum Wage Immanence Unit, Dome Riders 💣 tix on sale NOW 🦑

Japanese throat singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Posuposu Otani returns to 33-33 with ShuHaRi, the follow-up to his acclaimed self-titled debut.

Moving between mountain life and inner space, folk song and altered consciousness, ecological unease and the strange assumptions around which contemporary life is organised, ShuHaRi expands the singular musical world introduced on Otani’s first internationally released album.

Born in Kamakura in 1972, Otani began making music in his twenties through punk and home recording on four-track cassette. Time spent in San Francisco’s skateboarding scene and later travels through India and the Republic of Sakha — where encounters with throat singing and the Kohkin became part of his developing musical vocabulary — eventually fed into an approach to songwriting that now feels entirely his own.

From 2006 he became a distinctive presence in the Tokyo and Yokohama underground, closely associated with the experimental community surrounding Kouenji Enban. Yet there remains something strikingly modest about the distance between the originality of Otani’s music and the life from which it emerges. He spends much of his time in the mountains, fly fishing the rivers around his home, and his songs seem to grow from the same patient attention to landscape, people and small shifts in everyday life.

Next week... Thu 8th Oct!!! A very special evening of experimental sound, moving image and post-industrial machines with ‘Motorhand’ (Graeme Hogg), ‘Cheapest Cigs and Booze in Town’ (Tall) and ‘Invisible Creatures’ (Jennifer Wicks). They come together for an evening of experimental sound and moving image, moving between noise, projection, analogue processes, improvisation and technological misbehaviour.

Cheapest cigs n booze in town uses baffling pseudo scientific machinery to create a kaleidoscopichypnoticphantasmagoric light and sound show.

Motorhand is the end of the strasse for the electric motor. Noise and live melting of 16mm film using a modified Eiki. Film slowed down til it eventually dies. Motorhand is Graeme Hogg (Hogge) a co-founder of Cube Cinema in Bristol, UK, a long-standing hub for underground, independent, and DIY creative scenes since 1998. His film lab project Nachleben emerged from the preservation and repurposing of cinema machinery made available during the industry’s transition to digital.

Invisible Creatures industrial noise, sample culture and cut-up techniques. Using modified 16mm projectors, contact mics, and multiple guitar effects pedals, to craft layered, and dissonant sound and visual installations. Invisible Creatures is interdisciplinary artist and musician Jennifer Wicks. She also makes music with experimental post-punk duo WOMEN’S HOUR (J. Wicks and Murray CY). LP released on L.I.E.S. “Sounds like it coulda come out of a squat during the ‘80s by a duo that rarely sees sunlight” Norman Records; “messengers of certain northerly latitude of heck, wreathing scuzzy post-punk songcraft and spoken word in thistly distortion and dragged-backwards-thru-a-hedge drum machines and synths...sung with the acidic throat burn of being on the hash and cider lash for too long… 4AD calibre “ Boomkat

We are really excited for this Friday 25th Sept at @thegladcafe 😍 An amazing line up: NORMAL SERVICE with The SEEP and Jeux d'eau

This video is Normal Service playing their 'Song for Swinging Lovers' at the Glad earlier this spring. Tickets from @thegladcafe

After several years of fervent activity in Glasgow's underground music scene, Normal Service have a settled line-up, comprising erstwhile and current members of Lung Leg, Ganger, Sound of Yell, and Gag. The female rhythm section provides the backing for the interlocked guitars, saxophone bursts, and melodious flute. If you marry post-punk motorik beats with off-kilter jazz-tinged folk-rock, you will arrive at their unique blend of skronk wonk and roll. Normal Service have been likened to everything from Young Marble Giants, Fairport Convention, Captain Beefheart, The Ex, Josef K, Television and Henry Cow. They have just released their first EP ‘A Song for Swinging Lovers’ a rhapsodic folk-infused gallows tale on Raljex Records.

The Seep are dedicated Acolytes of The Corduroy Plunderground performing wonky drones and melodic improvisations on loose strings and tape. Rob Churm - Vox & 3-String Guitar, Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh - Viola and Eva Gnatiuk - Drums. Recent excursions have taken them through the window of 56 Ludlow Street, between the guards at the Whitney Museum of Art, and over the iron gates at 7118 Birdview Avenue, Point Dume.

Jeux d'eau is a Scottish - Belgian, Glasgow based collaboration between Simone Wilson and Loup Havenith. Together they compose music deriving from the poetics of space, cultural habitus, rhyzomic endeavours and the complexity of love.

Sat 24th Oct 🔮RICHARD YOUNGS, HEATHER LEIGH, LUKE FOWLER
tickets on sale now ⚡

Richard Youngs (b. 1966, Cambridge, England) is a musician based in Glasgow, Scotland. In an endlessly prolific and unpredictable career spanning more than 40 years, his diverse output defies the existence of any definitive biography or discography. Primarily recognised as a solo artist and writer of extended song, he is also an active cross-genre collaborator. Recent work includes "deep wallpaper" music with Daniel O'Sullivan, and the potentially global site-specific Here Is A Big Place project with Raymond MacDonald. Initially a rare live performer, he has embraced the stage, playing throughout Europe in the past few years.

West Virginia born, Texas raised, and now based in Glasgow, Scotland, Heather Leigh is a musician, artist and gardener who loves to sing and play pedal steel guitar. Impossible to pigeonhole, her playing is as physical as it is phantom, combining spontaneous compositions with psychedelic folk and industrial-strength progressive rock. Leigh’s steel mainlines sanctified slide guitar and deforms it using hypnotic tone-implosions, juggling walls of bleeding amp tone with choral vocal constructs and wrenching single note ascensions. Hers is a sound that's highly sensual and aesthetically aggressive, beautiful and fearless. Heather Leigh's work is all-over-the-place in the best way, from collaborations with Peter Brötzmann and Shackleton to properly mind-bending solo albums on Ideologic Organ, Editions Mego and Boomkat Editions.

Luke Fowler is an artist-filmmaker from Glasgow. He is a member of the band AMOR and has collaborated with Richard Youngs both live and on record for over 20 years. Other musical collaborators include Ryoko Akama, Eric La Casa, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Nakul Krishnamurthy, Anton Lukoszevieze, Toshiya Tsunoda, Marcus Schmickler and Mark Fell.

Found these photos Janet took of a performance myself and David Sillars did for Le Drapeau Noir at G.I. 2010. Le Drapeau Noir was an amazing artists cafe which took place over two weeks at The Old Hairdressers. Created by Raydale Dower, Rob Churm and Tony Swain. I’m dressed as the Ghost of Art Councils past.

TONIGHT: NAPPY NINA X SWARVY.... with local support from @aladji__ Fri 4th September 🔥 ticket link in bio

Video is Nappy Nina X Swarvy - Get Got feat. Stas Thee Boss (Official Video)

Nappy Nina doesn't fit neatly into boxes—and that's exactly the point. With precision and a conversational flow that sounds like talking to your most perceptive friend, she's built a career dismantling expectations of what rap can be and who gets to define it.

Raised in Oakland—daughter of jazz radio host Greg Bridges, granddaughter of jazz legend Oliver Johnson—Nina's musical lineage runs deep. Shaped by the Bay Area's poetry and hip-hop scenes, she left home and moved to Brooklyn in 2012 with $500 and a goal: to become one of the few Oakland rappers to break internationally. She co-founded indie label Lucid Haus and quickly became a vital voice in Brooklyn's avant-garde Black music community. Her 2019 debut album The Tree Act earned praise from Okayplayer, Bandcamp, and Pitchfork, establishing her as a lyricist with range and bite.

Since then, Nina has released a prolific run of work: 30 Bag, Double Down, Dumb Doubt, Mourning Due, and most recently Nothing Is My Favorite Thing with producer Swarvy, which she toured across Europe this year. Her collaborations read like a who's who of forward-thinking music: Ambrose Akinmusire, Quelle Chris, Yaeji, Pink Siifu, Son Lux, Moor Mother, Anna Wise, and Lucid Haus labelmate Stas Thee Boss (formerly of THEESatisfaction).

What sets Nina apart is her refusal to soften the edges. She raps about financial insecurity, grief, queerness, gentrification, and the knotty parts of being alive with a writer's eye for detail and a poet's instinct for emotion. Her music lives at the intersection of jazz, poetry, and experimental hip-hop—intimate, politically aware, and uncompromising. Whether over boom-bap, electronic beats, or jazz-inflected production, her voice remains unmistakable: vulnerable, incisive, deeply human.
