When the single was released I went in T O O L isolation. I didn’t want to listen, read reviews, see how many stars; no spoilers. I waited this long what was a few more days.
.
I wanted the full experience on 8.30.19. So here are my thoughts:
.
The production is unparalleled. The separation of instruments is a masterpiece. Perfect for peeling back all the layers to fully appreciate the music.
.
Danny Carey is a beast. His composition, structure, and clarity are unrivaled. Listen to the album focusing just on the drums. He IS the album.
.
A concept album. Their music makes an impression because of the cryptic nature of the lyrics. It’s the vicious cycle of listening and learning and interpreting. Same here.
.
Album structure. Same pattern and length. I understand prog music, but I would’ve preferred the long intros separate from the heavier parts. This would’ve also opened the door for a real aggressive track. It’s all intro, build, rif, crux. There really isn’t a Hooker, Pot or Jambi here.
.
Speaking of rif, where’d it go? Each song only features a small chunk of riffage. We mostly get ambience and build. 7empest is the outlier.
.
Played it safe. To me, FI is kind of 10.000 days pt. 2. The timing signature, riffing, and structure is more similar rather than a vanguard album different from the rest.
.
FI will stand the test of time. We’ve had 13 years to analyze Undertow, Ænima and Lateralus and convert them to classics.
.
To those one star reviewers, come find me in 5 years when you’re calling this their magnum opus.

Any #hammerhorde fans out there? Amazing side project and perfect way to finish out the month. The year of metal may be winding down, but there is still plenty of quality out there.

Another miss from way back in April. Seems like so long ago 🤯

Recommendation from @scarfacetupac 🤙🏿 Symphonic Black/Death outfit from France.
Symphonic element is the driver here. They ain’t messin’ around. Very predominant so beware if that isn’t your thing. For me, it fits and this is a great debut LP.

Unleash the Darkness slides somewhere in between Septic Flesh meets Mortemia meets Fleshgod Apocalypse.

Give it a spin 💿 and let me know 👇🏼 #mythark #mytharkband #unleashthedarkness #symphonicmetal #blackmetal #symphonicblackmetal #deathmetal #symphonicdeathmetal #metal #septicflesh #fleshgodapocalypse #mortemia #metalhead

Felt like I could appreciate October more than last month without the constant barrage of albums coming down the pipes.

I listened to these and many others in various ways - gym, driving, home, headphones, speakers, ear buds, loud and louder. Got a good taste of what’s out there.

While this month was also filled with great stuff there were some I enjoyed more than others.

Surprise of the month definitely has to Daemon by The True Mayhem. Album completely blew my mind.

So, enough of the chit chat, here’s my highlights for October.
