Last week I got to reunite, after 20+ years, with my first cheer coaches from when I was a competitive all-star cheerleader. I cheered in high school but had no idea what competitive cheerleading was. I don’t even remember how I was recruited but it opened me up to a whole new world and I joined the team. Being with my old coaches and a few other teammates who are all still my close friends, reminded me of just how much of an impact my coaches and this team had on me. What being a part of this team did for me as a teenager. And at a very unstable and uncertain time in my life. It gave me such a sense of direction and community that grounded me in a way I can see in hindsight, I very much needed. It also instilled a level of work ethic in me that has never left. I look back at this competition and am honestly amazed and so proud at what we did that day. A group of teenagers who were given 2:45 seconds to prove a year’s worth of hard work and everyone on that mat, locked in, trusted one another, worked together and showed up. We won 1st and became National Champions that day. Anyways…just nostalgic over here, going down memory lane and sharing the gratitude I feel for moments in time like this and people throughout life that shaped parts of me 🙏🏾❤️ And shout out to my Brandy braids I used to rock back then 😏
