Ideas are ubiquitous for they are the results of our limitless thoughts. But, only a few of them carry the wit and verve to turn into products of our decisiveness and resilience over time. Once materialized, they can lead to a chain of events; sometimes, even going on to alter the course of history. One such idea happened to have struck the imaginative mind of Ruth Handler like lightning. 'Twas the "idea" of Barbie. Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie', aside from paying a fitting tribute to the history of the beloved doll, is also a thoroughly amusing and unapologetic fantasy drama that is enriched with the idea of empowerment. While the doll has been symbolic of the notion of feminity for decades now, this Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling vehicle aspires to reinvent her for a newer generation where asking questions is the new norm. Robbie is remarkable as the titular Barbie. Her versatility and affable screen presence lend the story some depth and make her character come off as both desirable and believable. Needless to say, the actress warms your heart with her performance and leaves you asking for more. Indeed, her "stereotypical Barbie" is not only fashion-forward and fascinating but she is also incredibly empathetic and thoughtful. In her determined journey of self-discovery, the diva is chaperoned by Gosling's charismatic Ken, who is callow enough to fall for the rigged idea of patriarchy and, yet, refreshingly comical and endearing about it. The dynamic duo benefits from top-notch production value, flashy costumes, a foot-tapping soundtrack, and punchlines that manage to strike a chord with the audience. Sure, the motion picture is unabashedly sensational and over-the-top, but it does pack a punch when it comes to delivering entertainment. While I can't stress that this is Greta's finest project to date, it certainly is her most ambitious one, yet. She brings the idea of Barbie to life with skill and elan and takes us on a delightful trip down memory lane. Also, Helen Mirren's terrific narration (and occasional commentary) and the decent supporting cast serve as the cherry on this Barbie-themed cake. #barbie #film #movie #cinema #actor #actorslife
