Another stub here from yet another reggae show I attended in October ‘88 that I remember little to nothing about other than it was a showcase of sorts featuring legendary reggae rhythm duo of @slydunbar & @ #robbieshakespear and their band #taxiconnection or #taxigangband as they were also known…
Couldn’t find a setlist for this show but from what I could gather online is that it was somewhat sparsely attended with maybe only a few hundred or so people if that in the house that evening at the old #universalamphitheatre which had a capacity of 6,000 so a pretty small crowd that nite to witness one of the all time great duos with a combination of guest vocalists including Freddie McGregor and Maxi Priest…
Either way was a great way to see one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time in any genre not just reggae music, play live…especially as we’ve now lost both of these legends with Robbie having passed in 2021 and now Sly having passed away earlier this year in January…rest in power Sly & Robbie⚡️⚡️🇯🇲

🇯🇲 Today I’m reflecting with gratitude and love on Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare — two brothers in spirit whose impact still echoes across cultures, genres, and generations.
I was introduced to Sly & Robbie through my partner Rocky B, who knew a gentleman connected to them. At the time, they were looking for a producer who could bring a hip-hop sensibility to “Crazy Bald Heads,” originally written by the legendary Bob Marley and Vincent Ford, later reimagined by Sly & Robbie, featuring Beenie Man and Luciano.
From the very beginning, those brothers were nothing short of incredible — masters of rhythm, tone, and feel. While we were working on the track, they would call straight from the studio in Jamaica, checking in, vibing with the process, genuinely excited to hear how the hip-hop remix was coming together. That kind of openness and trust from legends? You never forget that.
When I finally finished the remix and played it back for them, they were happy — and that meant everything to me. It wasn’t just about the record; it was about respect across cultures, about reggae and hip-hop speaking the same language, about music continuing the conversation it’s always been having.
Sly and Robbie helped build bridges with drums and bass. Their sound traveled the world and brought people together who might’ve never met otherwise. I’m forever thankful for that moment, that trust, and that experience.
May they both rest in peace.
Their rhythm🇯🇲 lives on -Cutman L.G.🤘🏿🤘🏿

Gone but never forgotten.

On what would have been his 72nd birthday, September 27th, we remember the genius of Robbie Shakespeare, (September 27, 1953 – December 8, 2021) was one of the most influential bassists and producers in music history. As half of the iconic duo Sly & Robbie (The Riddim Twins), he did more than just play reggae; he helped define it and push it into the global mainstream. His legacy is permanently marked by his role in pioneering the powerful, tight "Rockers" rhythm style in the 70s and later spearheading the transition to digital instrumentation in dancehall. His distinctive, funky, and melodic basslines made Sly & Robbie the most sought-after rhythm section worldwide, allowing him to successfully cross genres and provide the rhythmic backbone and production for international superstars including Grace Jones (defining the groove of hits like "Pull Up to the Bumper"), Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, and countless others. He was the rhythmic anchor for thousands of tracks, with his genius recognized by his numerous Grammy nominations and his ranking as one of Rolling Stone's greatest bassists of all time. His thunderous, inventive groove remains the foundation of modern music.

Keep the bass shaking the heavens. 🙏
