“I’m interested in exploring the bonds of friendship in this piece,” said Conway. “Isaac, Sarah, and Emily are veterans who have performed with SFDanceworks for several seasons now, and they’re already good friends. In the trio we’re making together, I want to express their individuality.” SFDW prides itself on providing space for local artists to tell their stories and Brett is the perfect embodiment of that ethos. He has been pivotal to SFDW from all sides and is a thoughtful artist with a deep appreciation for the form. We can’t wait to see where he takes his SEASON 9 commission alongside Isaac Bates-Vinueza, Sarah Chou, and Emily Hansel who are such incredible artists and friends and who are part of the SFDW family. Over 14 years, Conway danced with Alonzo King LINES Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater, collaborating with some of the most influential choreographers in contemporary dance, before transitioning to freelance work. He served as co-artistic director of SFDanceworks from 2019 - 21, during which time he choreographed his first work for the company, The Bedroom, and produced Drew Jacoby’s short film, Evidence of It All. Earlier this year he choreographed Ariadne auf Naxos for the Merola Opera Program. LINK IN BIO TO GET TICKETS NOW! Photo credit: Robbie Sweeny

Two months since we performed our restaging of "Pallavi" at the Varnam Salon. It's one of the pieces closest to us, one that asks what happens when a classical form gets reinterpreted through lived experience. We were overjoyed by how well it was received at the showcase, and so honored to share the stage with such distinguished dancers. 📸: @robbiesweeny 🧠: @akhildances 💃: @akhildances @kanchan.raju @_amitdances @ishika_dance @dan.balagan #ishamidancecompany #indiancontemporary #varnamsalon #pallavi

On this Hungry Ghost Festival, we're sharing these amazing photos by @robbiesweeny from our commissioned work "Wandering Bodhisattva ᥔᥘᥛᥰᥔᥣᥘᥣᥝᥣᥔᥤᥓᥩᥓᥤᥔᥖᥲ 輪迴觀音" at @freshmeatsf 's 25th Annual #FreshMeatFestival Most people think of as a specifically Chinese Taoist festival, but there is also both Chinese Mahayana and southeast Asian Theravedin ancedents too, dating back to the same Shariputra in the Pali Canon who explained Buddha's teaching of gender non-attachment that our piece is based on. On Yulanpen, we take on the role of Bodhisattva's in the Ghost realm, spreading compassion and kindness to everyone, regardless of who they are or how little they have. To help us tell more meaningful stories rooted here in the Bay Area and around the world, auditon for our dance or non dance teams by this Monday August 31st at https://bit.ly/baicd-auditions 普渡平安 #盂蘭盆節 #七月半 #उल्लंबण #chinesedance

Yesterday jose e. abad danced a solo in the gallery at PLEASE. STAY. TOUCH. and I am still carrying it around. after the world, a gesture\ was a work in progress showing with jose, accompanied by Nik Kniehase. It came out of the loss of Jess, of Shakiri, and of others dear to jose. Drawing on the philosopher Federico Campagna, jose works from the idea that a world is a made thing, an artificial construct held together by the story a people tells about reality. When that story loses its ring of truth and its significance for living, the world it sustained disintegrates, and new and alien worlds emerge from the ruins. Over twenty minutes the piece moved between the interior of the gallery and the world outside it, building a small bounded world of time and space and relation that dissolved the moment it ended. TOMORROW, Friday July 31, 4 to 6 PM: REHEARSING OTHERS. jose teaches the tools and scores behind the piece. Social improvisation, revolutionary imagination, and the idea that other worlds get made through practice, myth, and collective embodied acts. Free. Max 26 people. RSVP link in bio. SATURDAY Aug 1, 12:15 PM: Rachael Dichter, Co-Artistic Director of GRAVITY, performs “you used to be naked.” In 2013 she and Jess made a duet where they stood side by side facing the audience and improvised a conversation, every sentence beginning “I want you to.” He had recently asked her to perform it again. Revisiting it on the two year marker of his passing, the piece has become about passing itself, about transition, and about the deep unknowability of death and what comes after. A short curator talk and a tour follow. I will be in the gallery until 4 PM giving free tours, so drop in any time. PLEASE. STAY. TOUCH. Jess Curtis Experiments with Gravity closes August 16.
