Shit’s been at my neck… you helped me cope with WAXER, I knew you knew how it felt. A love/hate bond of attachment of certain shit. You always hated when I shot your car on film too. You wanted a grimey look on digital…

Thank you for letting me a part of your last days. It’s even tough writing this because I know how wack you think this is. Thanks for being one of the realest people I’ve known, for good or bad.

This is the story of the “Arrogant Sapphire” 57. We have been trying to get the story on this wild 57 Chevy lowrider for a long time and finally we got it directly from the source, Bob Murphy the owner. It all started around 1963 for Bob when his brother Victor Murphy had his corvair Monza customized and cut for hydraulics by Bill Hines of Lynwood California. Bob’s brother Victor is one the earliest if not the very first lowrider from Compton and Victor’s Hines built Corvair made a huge impression. Bob used to sneak Victor’s car out and go cruising before he even had a drivers license, the hydraulics were such a fresh new thing. Bob and Victor went to Centennial High school and grew up right down the street in the same neighborhood Kendrick Lamar is from, Victor was class of 1962 and Bob was class of 1966. When Bob graduated in 1966 he bought a used 1957 Chevy Bel Air. One of the very first things he did was have his car cut for hydraulics by a neighborhood friend, and naturally for the customization he went to Bill Hines in Lynwood. Bill flared the fenders, dual frenched antennas, molded pipes, hideaway wipers and painted it a blue metalflake fadeaway with panels. Eddie Martinez did the interior in a metalflake blue with blue fur. Bob’s 57 might be the first lowrider on dayton or zenith wire wheels! The pinstriping on Bob’s 57 was done by Tom Kelly and Tom named the car “Arrogant Saphire” on the rear window. Bobs car debuted in this custom in the early 1970’s and immediately started to take home first place trophies at RG Canning shows and lowrider shows. When Bob’s chevy was fresh out of Bill Hines shop he pulled up to Centennial high during a football came and parked it right on the school lawn with the hydraulics down, this made a huge impact on future Compton lowriders. I was very lucky to meet Bob, after I interviewed Jimmy Woods he connected me with Bob and last weekend I set up an in person interview to learn his history with Mitch Hines who’s grandpa built his car. It was incredible to see all the trophies for his 57 and to find out he still owns the car 58 years later! We have 2 hours worth of video interview footage coming soon so stay tuned.

What you’re watching here is very important car history and cultural history. This clip is from the 1968 documentary called “Black on Black” by Alberto-Culver. In this specific clip that was filmed in South Los Angeles it documents the young low-riders at the time and some of the troubles from the police these low-riders endured. This is to my knowledge the earliest video documentation of the use of the term Lowrider. 1968 is very early to associate this term with this style of car only a few years earlier they started putting hydraulics in custom cars. This also could be one of the very first public films to show the use of lowrider hydraulics as well. This video also features a corvair Monza which was a popular choice for south LA area lowrider enthusiast at the time. In this time period lowered cars were notorious for being ticketed. Important History! I added the song “Spreadin Honey” by the 103rd street Watts Rhythm band in the background, a great song from 1967. #lowriderhistory#kustom#46to64#blackhistory#lowrider#lahistory#kustomrama#100percentlowrider
