In France? Whether it’s your first visit or a return after some time, make room for the Bourse de Commerce, where contemporary art, remarkable architecture, and centuries of history invite a closer look.

Once a grain market, later a commodities exchange, the Bourse de Commerce carries its history into its present life. Tadao Ando’s concrete cylinder creates a striking encounter with the historic rotunda: two architectural languages that make you more aware of the space around you.

Restored for the building’s transformation into a museum, this vast painting circles the space beneath the dome. Pause here before entering the galleries: its nineteenth-century vision of global commerce adds another layer to a building now devoted to contemporary art.

François Pinault’s collection comprises more than 10,000 works. At the Bourse de Commerce, rotating exhibitions bring different parts of that collection into focus. The following works offer ways into its depth, and the close looking it rewards.

Reflective surfaces and a central relief make perception part of the encounter. Neither conventionally painting nor sculpture, Judd’s “specific object” asks you to attend to what is physically there: material, light, and form.

White becomes the subject itself. Against sky blue and deep black, its variations gain intensity; a reminder that a restrained palette can hold your attention through the smallest shifts in color and application.

Robert Ryman: The Real Thing
📍 Barbican Art Gallery, London
📅 9 October 2026 – 28 February 2027

Currently on view at the Barbican Art Gallery, Robert Ryman: The Real Thing presents over 60 works spanning the mid-1950s to the early 2010s, offering an in-depth look at the American artist’s remarkable exploration of painting.

Known for his predominantly white paintings, square formats, and experimentation with materials, Ryman challenged conventional ideas of what a painting could be. His works draw attention to the texture of paint, the qualities of each surface, and the relationship between the artwork, the wall, and the surrounding space.

The retrospective invites visitors to slow down and experience painting through close observation, discovering the subtle differences and unexpected possibilities within Ryman’s practice.

I visited Robert Ryman at the @barbicancentre • works across a lifetime gathered in the Gallery space, almost all white.

In the absence of colour there is an emphasis on texture, stroke, scale and surface - putting material, its treatment and placement at the forefront. As Ryman was a painter and a musician, there is a connection found in using the same tools and materials to arrive at a catalogue of results.

The gallery, which initially felt bare, soon became full with a range of response and questions. First, disbelief- “Is this ironic?”, and “Surely that’s just some paint”. Then curiosity - “Why *that* line?, What is else was happening at the time? How did the surface interact with the paint? What he was thinking at the time? And finally, awe and admiration in “Maybe he just thought “yolo- I’ll do what I want.”

That last thought is my favourite, because isn’t that what making art is…to close the gap between the mind and the body through Self truth and courage?

It is within Robert Ryman’s choice to paint the paint, his disregard for what made sense to everyone else and the courage arrive closer to his own vision that made this show impactful. In taking away stimuli, he created room to play, wonder and feel everything from disbelief to resonance.

This morning @friezeofficial pv of Robert Ryman:The Real Thing @barbicancentre - what a standout show. The whitest parts of the show are in fact the gallery walls, what becomes evident as you look at Ryman’s paintings are the changes in texture, grain and surface - the shades of blues, greys, browns, even orange that shimmer behind, alongside or over his canvases. The Barbican’s brutalist walls and textured ceilings are the perfect foil for this show, I came out feeling as if I’d been inside one huge Ryman painting.

His music/painting analogy is one I share and often discuss in groups and classes - as repeated in the exhibition notes: ‘Like music, [painting] can meaningfully affect us without needing to be understood.’

This was true today, as my synaesthesia went into complete overdrive looking and feeling these creamy/oatmealy surfaces. A painting doesn’t have to tell a story, it can just be.

Ryman was a huge lover of jazz and bebop, in late 50s New York he eventually had to make a choice between music or painting. I think he made the right one.

He was a museum guard who never went to art school. Then he painted white for 60 years and changed how we look at painting.
