Art Basel Paris 2026 is now open ✨

Zander Galerie is presenting a selection of works at Booth C38 in the Grand Palais, among them: 🕰️ On Kawara, whose Date Paintings register the passing of time one day at a time; 🎞️ Robert Frank, with Polaroids that reveal his layered, collage-like approach to photography; ⛓️ Cosmo Whyte, with a curtain work in which painting and sculpture meet; 📷 Lewis Baltz, whose tightly framed black and white views of suburban housing reduce the built landscape to its essentials; and 🎨 Joe Goode, whose painting centres on the act of seeing itself, and who is currently on view in our gallery exhibitions in both Paris and Cologne.

📍 Grand Palais, Paris, Booth C38
🗓️ Public days: 23 to 25 October 2026

We look forward to welcoming you at @artbasel.

Thanks to Lee for letting me steal your copy of The Americans! 🙏🏻

To celebrate International Photobook Day, we’re looking back at one of the most influential photobooks in the history of photography:

Robert Frank’s The Americans.

Robert Frank — The Americans

First published in France in 1958 and in the United States in 1959, The Americans is a landmark photobook that reshaped the way photographers approached documentary photography and the photobook as a medium.

Travelling across the United States in the mid-1950s, Swiss-American photographer Robert Frank photographed everyday life on the road, from diners, highways, and petrol stations to political gatherings, jukeboxes, and quiet moments of isolation. Through his observations, Frank created an unconventional portrait of a nation marked by contradictions, racial divisions, social inequality, and the distance between the American dream and everyday reality.

Rejecting the polished optimism often associated with American photography at the time, Frank’s grainy images, unconventional compositions, and loose, intuitive sequencing captured something raw and deeply personal. Accompanied by Jack Kerouac’s introduction in the American edition, the book became a defining work of post-war photography and influenced generations of photographers to come.

More than a document of a particular time and place, The Americans demonstrates how a photobook can tell a story through the relationships between images, creating meaning through rhythm, repetition, and juxtaposition.

New book, ‘Theatre of Space vol 1’ by Nigel Grierson, is now available in bookstores both physical and online, and signed copies can be purchased from the lostpress.org website. The book consists of documentary photographs taken mainly in the early 1980’s during his time at the RCA, although a few are from earlier at Newcastle Polytechnic. It also features a very nice essay by esteemed writer, Gerry Badger, in which he puts the work back into it's historical conext.

Original: "There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment."

Von Robert Frank (1924–2019), ein schweizerisch-amerikanischer Fotograf, Regisseur und Kameramann, der als einer der einflussreichsten Pioniere der dokumentarischen Fotografie im 20. Jahrhundert gilt.
