Robert Indiana‘s LOVE sculptures are among the most recognized public artworks in the world. Indiana created his image LOVE in 1964. What began as a work on paper developed into an influential painting and sculpture series that he would return to throughout his six-decade career. In 1966, Indiana carved his first LOVE sculpture, and kept returning to the motif for the rest of his career – its four bold letters becoming a symbol of the era’s message of peace and love. Here, four LOVEs are stacked in Cor-Ten steel and arranged so their four O’s meet in the centre. Indiana first used this layout in a painting titled LOVE Wall in 1966.

Text Yoko Ono by Jérôme Sans

Purple The Peace issue #46 F/W 2026-2027
@purplefashionmagazine @ozpurple @yokoono

« Silence, resistance, tenacity, gentleness - a lifetime of artistic engagement for peace. Imagine Peace is a work by the Japanese artist Yoko Ono that the world seems destined to continue hearing. Not because the artist doubts her own affirmation, or because she is searching for herself, but because the world still has not fully I understood this work. Because the world keeps shattering our fragile peace and forever rekindling eternal conficts. For more than half a century, the artist has been repeating this message. She repeats it with gentleness and obstinacy. She repeats it in newspapers, on city walls, projected in the sky, on screens, and on the volcanic stones of islands. She repeats it in 24 languages, so that no one can claim not to have heard the mes-sage. She tirelessly repeats these two words:
« Imagine peace. » Two words, an injunction. A verdict of collective failure and, simultaneously, a most beautiful form of resistance. » Jérôme Sans

William Katz describes Indiana’s artistic vocabulary as that of a formalist, a geometer, and a poet: “Geometry, Identity, Memory, and the encircling unity of these three.” The found wood bears the written word of a poet that condenses to a spiritual sign. Every element here asserts its “thingness”: nothing is other than itself, the word is not a stand-in for the thing, but the thing itself, for the “word became image.” In his works, the materiality of the found exists in a productive tension with the perfect surfaces of the hard-edge paintings and the LOVE sculptures. Between found materials, words, numbers, signs, and forms, an artistic oeuvre emerges that is borne by contradiction and marked by continuing significance.

Robert Indiana’s work is rooted in acts of transformation. From the weathered wood, rusted wheels, discarded architectural elements, and commercial stencils he found around Coenties Slip to the hard-edge paintings and monumental word sculptures for which he became known, Indiana repeatedly converted the overlooked and the ordinary into highly charged artistic form. His own description of this process as the transmutation of ‘the lost into the found, junk into art, the neglected into the wanted, the unloved into the loved, dross into gold’ provides a key to understanding the material, formal, and symbolic logic of his work.
