Shared space (noun): a place or environment used by multiple people or groups for common activities or interaction.

I’ve been asked many times over the past 10 years what my favorite thing about the sport of Track & Field is, and only now that I’ve finished with the sport have I found my answer.

It was never the championship races, or the PB times, or even running a re-run for a national prelim in front of thousands of people by myself. It was never the school/national records, the team championships, or the 6 a.m. bus leave time.

It was the Shared Space that this sport brought into my life. Nowhere else could I wake up for 8 a.m. hill runs on Fridays during the fall training, and before running, have group conversations with Jumpers from France, Germany, Norway, and North Africa, and Sprinters from Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, and the Virgin Islands.

This sport allows all of us to have something in common, and now that I’ve officially raced across the finish line one final time, the thing I will miss most was having that shared space with strangers like me.

Thank you to everybody who has ever believed in me, and pushed me to get outside my comfort zone. The kid from small town Nebraska accomplished what he only thought was possible through dreaming🙏🏻

To keep myself out of trouble and off my phone; I picked up a camera. Over the course of a month and a half I taught myself how to take better and better pictures. 4000 photos later, 2000 of which are available to you, and I am satisfied with my work.
