And yet, you stayed

We did not begin as something simple.
There was friction in our first light, misread silences, words that landed heavier than intended, moments where distance grew quietly between us even while we stood close.
We learned each other the hard way.
Not through ease, but through staying.
Through choosing to remain when it would have been simpler to step back and call it incompatibility.
There were days when I didn’t understand you, and nights when I wasn’t understood.
But somehow, in the middle of that uncertainty, we kept reaching.
Not perfectly, not always at the right time,
but enough.
And that enough became something steady.
What we have now is not fragile.
It isn’t built on illusion or effortless harmony.
It is shaped by every difficult conversation
we didn’t avoid, every moment we could have turned away but didn’t.
You have seen me unguarded, unfinished,
in moments I would not have chosen to show anyone.
And you stayed, not out of obligation, but because something in you decided I was worth understanding.
I see that.
I carry that.
There is a quiet strength in us now.
Not loud, not dramatic.
But constant, like something that has settled into its own truth.
We are still here.
Not because it was easy, but because it mattered.
And it still does.

The space I made for you

You have no idea how much I would have loved you.
Maybe it’s better that way.
Maybe it’s better you never saw the version of me that softened in your direction.
How I might have reached for you without asking if it was safe to do so.
There are things in me that only ever wake up once, and they stirred at the sound of your name.
You never saw it.
The way I was already building a space
where your shadow could rest beside mine.
You never knew how I memorized the silence between your words like it meant something.
I would have carried your pain without asking if it would tear me open.
I would have stayed long after staying cost me something.
But you never asked.
And I never said.
And maybe that silence was mercy in disguise.
Some truths are too sharp to touch.
Some love is better unlived, unbroken,
and unseen.
You have no idea how much I would have loved you.
Maybe it’s better that way.

Absolutely not!

Answer the phone

I keep walking through the silence, though the ground is unsteady, each step breaking against something unseen.
The air tastes of metal, like a memory I can’t spit out.
I press my hands together, but they are not enough to hold what spills, the ache, the heat, the absence.
Shadows lengthen even when there is no sun, and I learn how to speak without sound, how to cry without water, how to live without breath.
And only at the end do I remember, this was the moment you stopped answering the phone.

Dried flowers

I still got the first flowers you got me.
They’re sitting in a glass jar on my shelf.
The water turned cloudy years ago,
but I never poured it out.
It feels like some part of us is still floating there.
Not alive, but not gone either.
Sometimes, when I walk past, I catch the faint scent of dust and memory.
It’s strange how grief can smell so quiet.
I don’t reach for them anymore, don’t rearrange their wilted stems, don’t try to make them beautiful.
They already were.
You used to say love was about tending,
about small daily gestures that keep the heart from drying out.
I used to believe that.
Now I think love is more about what survives
after we stop trying, the things we can’t throw away because they once meant something real.
The flowers are proof that something bloomed.
Even if it couldn’t last.
Even if all I have now is a jar of faded color
and the quiet ache of remembering.

Too deep for this

I notice everything.
The way someone’s eyes flick away in the middle of a sentence.
The half-second pause before they answer.
The tone that says more than the words.
Most people don’t seem to feel like this,
not all the way down to the bone.
They move through love like it’s ankle-deep water, safe, splashy, never cold enough to hurt.
I want the kind that pulls you under, the kind that leaves you gasping because it’s too much, too real.
But here, no one dives in.
They just skim the surface.
I choke on my own tongue when someone throws out a word without thinking what it really means.
It sits in my mouth like broken glass.
I can’t swallow it.
My mind works like sonar, picking up what isn’t said, the weight behind a sigh, the truth hiding in a throwaway joke.
I’m not sure anyone’s ready to meet me here, in the deep end.
So I just tread water and wait for someone
who can breathe like I do.

Glass

I tell people I’m unbreakable.
It’s easier than admitting how fragile I really am.
But the truth is, I am glass pretending to be stone.
Cracked long ago, jagged in ways I can’t fix.
I cover it with sharp words, with tempers and storms, but if you touched me gently,
you’d still bleed.
Because even my softness can wound.

Babes. 💃🏽

The distance between streetlights

The street is not silent, it hums with the low breath of lamps, with the shuffle of unseen steps, with the weight of eyes I cannot name.
Every shadow feels like a question I was never meant to answer.
Keys press into my palm, a useless armor,
metal biting skin as if it could promise safety.
The night carries stories of other women’s endings.
They float behind me like ghosts, whispering warnings I already know.
Don’t walk too fast.
Don’t walk too slow.
Don’t exist too loudly.
I shrink my body into the outline of invisibility, yet I know the world still sees
a girl, alone, moving through the open mouth of darkness.
Even the streetlights seem fragile, their glow trembling, unable to hold back the vastness of anger that clings to the air.
And I wonder, how many men taste freedom in these same streets, while I taste only the sharp tang of fear, every corner another prayer that I will reach the door, the lock,
the silence of safety, alive.
