The Yew Tree Cider Trials is a peer-judged cider and perry competition. If you can make it - and bring it round to @yewtreepeterstow - you can judge it.

Then there's the odds and sods like me who somehow get to judge you without lifting a finger first. Before the afternoon was over, I tasted tiny amounts of about 30 different perries.

The pub is well worth a visit even if you're planning to sample a little less than I did (it's a great one for pome-botherers, but even here you probably won't get this much perry behind the bar on a given Tuesday), especially if it's one of the days they're doing a tour of their orchard too (check the Ross cider website).

The whole situation of the Yew Tree, where you can almost be lulled into orchards unawares, puts me most in mind of an inn I chose to visit in Avebury before the summer solstice, because it was the only pub in the world inside a stone circle.

I thought this meant the rocks would be right bang in front of my pint. In reality, the whole village is contained within the stones, which is in a way more beautiful imo.

This is kind of what it feels like when people are willing to turn up to this pub from so many different places to celebrate together the things you can do with all this fruit 🥤

Found this t-shirt combination strangely moving, as if someone had invented time travel just for a competition where your palate of 30 years ago judges alongside yourself in your next generation.

The results are in!

This weekend the Royal Three Counties Show hosted a tightly contested and high quality International Cider Championship. Entries were up 10% on 2025 and featured several of the makers exhibiting at the show as part of the annual Three Counties Cider Festival held in the showground. Excitingly, this year’s Best in Show prize was sponsored by STIHL, who provided electrical pruning tools for the winner.

This year’s competition was judged by four titans of the craft cider industry: Current Chair of the Three Counties Cider and Perry Association, Lydia Crimp of @artistrawcider alongside Emma Jordan of @bluebarrelcider Tom Oliver of @tomoliverscider and James Forbes of @littlepomona Sincere thanks to our Head Steward and event photographer @helenannesmith and Assistant Steward Andrew Backinsell ❤️

Many thanks to every entrant to the competition who help keep the spirit of cidermaking alive in the Three Counties, the rest of the United Kingdom and abroad. And our warmest congratulations to all who took home prizes.

The Cider Festival has been a celebrated part of the Royal Three Counties Show for over two decades and allows the Three Counties Cider & Perry Association to educate and inspire members of the public by introducing them to the quality produce being made in our local area, showcasing apple pressing techniques and educating them on the historic importance of cider and perry to the Three Counties.

The results are shown above but please note there were no entries received for no/low cider and no prizes awarded in ‘Specialty Cider’

What a wonderful weekend, we’re already looking forward to our International Perry Championship taking place at the Autumn Show, more details to come!

An honour to take part in the judging of the @museumofcider International Cider & Perry Competition 2026 with @alison_taffs @wardington_bear and a team of other industry professionals! Expertly organised by @lzbth_p and her great team in the museum, this competition has been going since the early 1980s so you really feel like you’re treading in the footsteps of some big names that have gone before you. A special congratulations to James at @greggspit for overall winner with an absolutely delicious bottle conditioned Thorn perry that blew our socks off!
The next day it was into the archives with @elishaimogen to go back over some of the Herbert Edward Durham collection there and then at HARC. Another huge congratulations to all our winners at this year’s International Cider & Perry Competition, especially to @henhopecider who was awarded Overall Champion for their single variety Foxwhelp! 👏🏻🏆 thank you to all who entered, as ever there were some amazing cider and perries this year.

Also thanks to those who came to our ‘You be the Judge’ event last night, where the public sampled competition entries. We’re pleased to announce that @pipscider dry was voted the People’s Favourite by those who attended, congratulations! 🎉

Fantastic article by Siemens Robin Bornoff discussing empirical and computational analysis of fluid dynamics, mechanical and optical properties of fluids and rheoscopic fluids. There's a great simulation of a real world Vortex Dome with a side by side CFD comparison. Clearly I'm biased but I loved this!
