When designing a home around a curated collection of art, the key is to find a color in the art piece to weave as a common thread from one room to the next. This client's collection is full of saturated abstracts, and with the home's modern backdrop, the art brings so much energy and playfulness to each room.

The 4-D Effect: Lighting

Often overlooked, lighting can add another dimension to a three-dimensional sculpture. Whether it illuminates a surface, reveals the luminous materials within, or gives depth to the negative space surrounding it, light can transform how a work is experienced.

John Buck’s installation at Robischon Gallery is a beautiful example of this. The controlled light casts perspective onto the work, while the shifting light throughout the day creates an ever-changing relationship between sculpture, shadow, and space.

The shadows become part of the artwork—stretching, shifting, and giving the sculpture a presence that extends beyond its physical form.

Light doesn’t simply illuminate the work. It allows it to breathe, evolve, and occupy the space in another dimension.

Even the most antiquated technologies were once revolutionary. Advances in communication once bridged the gaps in our society. That notion often feels mostly antiquated today.

In 1976, Jim Robischon opened a Denver gallery with a stubborn idea: show living artists, and show the ones from here. Fifty years later, galleries everywhere are closing, and Robischon is still standing.

Here’s the story that sums it up. When co-owner Jennifer Doran needed a liver, one of the gallery’s own artists, Derrick Velasquez, gave her more than half of his.

Happy 50th, Robischon. The full story from our September issue is at the link in our bio.

“For me painting has a malleable ability to absorb so much of what is going on, especially right now. In my work, there is an interweaving of personal history, the cultural moment and an art historical thread. I am interested in the nexus between light and dark, between the human spirit and its capacity to transform, to endure and to rise. “

It’s September already — and the new issue is out. Here’s what you’ll find inside:

We spend a day at True Companions (@truecompanionsco), the Santa Fe Arts District shelter formerly known as MaxFund, working to find every animal its forever home.
We mark 50 years of @robischongallery, Denver’s leading contemporary gallery.
And we head up to the rooftop at @claytondenver for SHEEP — Kelly Whitaker and Taylor Stark’s fire-driven tasting menu, running only through Oct. 4.

Plus: a Colorado Wine Week tasting with the sommeliers at @bonniebraeliquor, a full slate of September happenings in Local Pulse, dispatches from Aspen Art Week, and @recreativedenver’s Emily Korson on her ideal Sunday.

Pick it up from your mailbox or read the whole issue at mydenvermag.com. Link in bio!
