Fantastic day in the studio this weekend teaching this group of super keen students all eager to learn some new skills. They all demonstrated good hand skills as well as mastering the router table and #festooldomino machine.

With some expert tuition matched with their enthusiasm and attention to detail (well we did have three talented architects, and an IT specialist in the group!) they all produced exceptionally crafted hardwood mirrors to proudly show off to their family and friends! Well done guys!

The Fish knife is my contemporary interpretation of the Makaha machine and the Pipeliner. The two centre boards in this photo were shaped in 2002 but as exciting as they look, they were too extreme. They did however light the flame that has burned for the last two decades.Over the years this model has been finely tuned into one of my favourites. It has a thin nose with rolled flat-panel centre back and a slight concave vee through the tail and low boxy rails. The mid-range version is perfect as a step up in testing surf and from 9’0"up they are high line trimmers on long summer walls or a cruising hybrid gun for the less intense winter lines. A fantastic board for those incredible days in the Pays Basque or the easier 6 to 8 ft days at La Nord. A perfect alternative for someone who doesn’t want a longboard on the long period knee high lines that grace the Atlantic coastline, Ideally the Fish Knife will glide on autopilot when you hit that sweet spot in the middle. Speed lining high along the face before pivoting off the back foot and carving through the pocket. A board where you leave your ego on the beach. A board that will let you enjoy surfing for what it is and what it can be if you want it. The thrill of the high line speed trim and catching that wave you may have missed.
