As Te Wiki o te Reo Māori draws to a close tonight, and with the Bird of the Year 2026 winner announcement coming tomorrow - we'd love to share this beautiful piece performed by our tenors and basses during our 2024 concert: Whakarongo! A Choral Concert of Aotearoa Composers.
I Te Pō, by Rob Ruha, was written as a way to help process the grief of family members passing away.

Te piki kōtuku
kua riro atu rā
Kua rere atu rā koe ki ngā rangi i runga
Ki o rahi, ki o nui i te pō
Waiho mai au, mokemoke ai
- i te pō, i te pō

My precious white heron
That has been taken away
You have flown to the skies above
To your loved ones in the night
Leaving me alone and lost
In the darkness
In the darkness....

The Kōtuku, or white heron, has long been revered in Māori culture as a taonga (treasure), a manu of deep cultural significance. The Kōtuku features in many legends, and its grace and pure white plumage set it apart from other birds. In Māori mythology, the Kōtuku is believed to be a messenger that inhabits the spirit land of Reinga, accompanying the wairua (spirit) of the deceased from earth to the stars. Further strengthening its association with the spiritual world, an old funeral chant concludes with the line: ‘Ko tō kotuku tō tapui, e Tama e, Kōtuku is now thy sole companion, O my son.’
