The 1992 Renault Racoon is an extraordinary prototype vehicle that aimed to express escape, freedom and adventure. The Racoon was designed by the Renault Design Advanced Design Studio, led by Patrick Le Quément under the direction of Jean-François Venet and interior work was completed by Axel Breun. The Racoon was built physically by Bernard Pene's D3 Atelier near Paris. The fully functional all-wheel-drive project combined innovative engineering with striking aesthetics. Its futuristic body featured a canopy-style door layout, emphasizing a unique, almost aircraft-like profile. Powering the vehicle was a 2.96-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, offering impressive performance for a concept designed as much to inspire as to demonstrate technological capability. The Racoon’s robust chassis and AWD system highlighted Renault’s focus on off-road versatility, while the overall design language hinted at a playful yet purposeful approach to automotive experimentation. More than just a styling exercise, the Racoon represented a blend of mechanical ingenuity, avant-garde design, and the thrill of exploration. Accessing the Renault Racoon required opening a dramatic canopy-style door, revealing seating for three passengers and dedicated space for luggage. Beyond its striking design, the vehicle was engineered for amphibious use, capable of traversing water as well as land, and featured an adjustable suspension that could raise the car for extra ground clearance through a clever levered mechanism. Ahead of its time, the Racoon incorporated advanced technologies rarely seen in 1992, including rain-diffusing glass, remote-controlled entry, onboard computer systems, satellite navigation, and cameras replacing traditional rearview mirrors. While these innovations are commonplace today, they were cutting-edge and largely experimental when the model first debuted, underscoring Renault’s forward-thinking approach to design and functionality. • How many made: 1 • Engine: 2.96 L twin-turbo V6 • Debut: 1992 • Top Speed: ~140 mph (estimated) • 0-60mph: ~6.5 s (estimated) • Photo Credit: @robson71andy and @499luigi • Research: @rarecarsonly

If you’re unfamiliar with Opel Automobile GmbH (Opel), it was founded as a sewing machine company by Adam Opel in 1862 before shifting to automobiles in 1899. Today, it’s a subsidiary of Stellantis (since January 2021). Among its notable creations is the 2002 Opel Eco Speedster, with this particular example shown here on being on display at the 2003 Poznań Auto Show. Based on the Vauxhall VX220 (Opel Speedster), this innovative prototype featured a carbon-fiber body and major aerodynamic upgrades. Its interior, designed for track use, included a roll cage and gullwing doors. Developed by GM-owned Opel, the Eco Speedster aimed to introduce a new common-rail direct injection Turbo-Diesel engine. Classified under ‘special automobiles with turbocharged diesel engines (1100-1499 ccm),’ the car was tested at Opel’s Dudenhofen facility in a 24-hour, FIA-sanctioned world record attempt. It set 17 world records in its class, marking another milestone in Opel’s diesel technology journey. Previously, on June 1, 1972, at the same track, a modified Opel GT with a 95 hp, 2.1-liter turbo-diesel engine also set diesel records. Opel’s MD, Kevin Wale, said, “The Eco-Speedster symbolizes our diesel offensive and demonstrates Opel’s engineering expertise in powertrains, lightweight design, and aerodynamics.” Though the Eco Speedster was never intended for production, elements of its design were planned to influence future models, supporting Opel’s commitment to expanding its diesel range. The Eco Speedster remains a testament to Opel’s innovative blend of fuel efficiency and aerodynamics. • How many made? One of three experimental fuel economy and speed record prototypes • Engine: 1.3-liter, 82 kW/112 hp CDTI ECOTEC Diesel • Debut: 2002 Paris Motor Show • Top Speed: 155 mph • 0-60mph: N/A • Photo Credit: @robson71andy • Research: @rarecarsonly
