POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

As a teenage Guns N’ Roses fan, I already knew who Doug “Dougie” Goldstein was. I knew what he looked like. I knew the sound of his voice.

He was the moustached guy fighting off fans in the legendary Ritz concert footage as much as the good-looking über manager in the Use Your Illusion tour documentary — millions can do wonders to your looks 🤣

Years later, while preparing a Rolling Stone assignment in Los Angeles, I finally got in touch with him. I had already interviewed legendary managers like Rod Smallwood and had dinner with Shep Gordon, but Doug was something else. He was the man behind one of the most successful—and certainly one of the wildest—concert tours in rock history.

When I told him I had known who he was since I was 16, he replied: “I love you already!!”

We became friends quickly once we met in LA. As David Lee Roth would say—another legend Doug had countless hilarious stories about—we’d be “laughing like thieves” about anything.

That was 2014. We never met in person again, but for the next 12 years we kept in touch, calling each other every now and then. His birthday call was always one of the highlights of my day.

Doug loved life. He loved good food, especially seafood, and every now and then I’d get a call from yet another little fish joint somewhere, just to tell me what he was eating and how good it was. That was Doug.

The last I heard from him was two months ago, after he had moved back to California. We were supposed to do an interview for Rolling Stone. It never happened.

If rock ‘n’ roll had its own Medal of Honor, Doug would have earned it night after night—in the pit, backstage, on the road, wherever trouble was waiting.

To the world, he was the former manager of Guns N’ Roses.
To me, he was a good friend.

I’ll miss your calls, brother.
Rest easy, Doug
