What a surprise to find a 1974 and 1975 Mondavi at auction in France! The bottles bear an inscription from an American gifter, presumably to the French recipient whose cellar went to auction 50 years later. As illustrated by the @academieduvinlibrary ‘s recent book on the subject, American wines had been launched onto the world stage by the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Though these two particular bottles of Mondavi hadn’t stood the test of time, the excellent 74 Stag’s Leap illustrates why American wines received justified acclaim.

@forman_vineyard the most important Vineyard in Napa Valley. I could go a step further and say the most substantial Vineyard in the New World for Cabernet Sauvignon.

@rockincabs has been plotting this tasting for 2 years +. Thank you sir for sourcing and collecting just pristine examples of 51 year old wines. Phil meticulously decided to do the 1975 vintage instead of the smorgasbord that was the original judgment of Paris tasting. 1975 was an incredible vintage in Napa & Santa Cruz and one of the best vintages is the challenging 70’s decade for Bordeaux.

Simply Californication. With that said truly there wasn’t a bad wine & I would have been thrilled drinking any of them.

The #leovillelascases was actually my personal #1, @chateau_montrose was stunning, @heitz Martha was 101 a lesson in Martha, @closduval was a sneaky wine and developed into a beauty, @chateaumoutonrothschild_ & @chateauhautbrion_ both were good yet did have some vine shut down stress from the hot 75 summer. Sadly the @freemarkabbey was a maderized bottle… next time. (With that said Phil & I enjoyed a 68 Bocshe from them last week and that bottle belongs in this class so I’m confident a correct bottle of FM will stand sound in the group.

Sunday Funday. SO MANY GREAT WINES. Bob was in town so we had some fun !

Rayas was sadly a ghost of itself — just faint hints of what it once was.
The 1999 Jasmin Magnum was corked.

@verdadlindquistfamilywines — per the usual, Bob crushed it.
• The ‘04 Roussanne (magnum) was ridiculous straight out of the gate.
• The ‘05 Roussanne from magnum was a ripper — did the classic Roussanne thing and opened up into an absolute epic after 3 hours.
• The ‘11 Block 11 Bien Nacido Chardonnay was STELLAR. Easily the best Chardonnay of the day.
• The ‘95 Hillside Syrah straight-up bested Guigal La La by a long shot (my opinion, fight me).
Wine of the day (and easily wine of the year so far):
The 1968 @freemarkabbey Bosche Cabernet. First-growth level, full stop.
Perfectly integrated fruit, acid, tannin, and oak. Subtle herb notes with that classic Rutherford alluvial soil signature — you could taste exactly what @morisolivineyard showed us last month from digging up the “rocks” in his new vineyard on the bench. The 68 was true masterpiece. The label didn’t survive the test of time, but the wine sure did. On par with the best 1st growths I’ve ever had.

We also opened another bottle where the label didn’t stand the test of time. Looked like a Sterling, but it definitely wasn’t the 74 that it was thought possibly be. @rockincabs and I know the ‘74 Sterling Reserve extremely well… this wasn’t it. Still an excellent bottle though — my gut thinks it was another non-Reserve vintage. Beautiful Calistoga fruit and earth.

So many other great wines to much to list but everything else there SHINNED!

As Phil and I continue to discuss the multiple projects that we have brewing like @1889wine and me helping him with perhaps a judgment thing @judgementofparis50 😉…

We were having a detailed conversation about one of the most famous important, legendary wine makers from California. This was the synopsis of our conversation and I think it’s something that is missed heavily in the wine industry from a consumer standpoint, sales standpoint, marketing standpoint & general understanding.

Charles Cros Grande Réserve 2023 • Global warming, some see it as a gift to cooler climates - it’s one factor that has allowed the English wine industry to blossom. As with many things, there is a counter to the positive - wildfires are increasingly common around the Mediterranean. Unfortunately the region of Fabrezan, home to today’s winery, has been particularly affected recently. So to ensure that these winemaking communities, cultures and industries survive, we should strive to drink responsibly by supporting the producers who craft the wines we love. • Hauterive IGP -  Fabrezan, Corbières, Languedoc
100% Syrah
Manual Harvest Whole-bunch Fermentation
Breathed for 40 mins • Like a well tended garden, the wine beckons with flowery aromas - violets register and that hue carries through into a deep purple colour. The nose’s medium (+) intensity offers a bounty of dark fruit, florals and hints of spice. Wild flowers join the fray, while blueberry, mulberry, prune and kirsch flesh out the core flavours. Morsels of raspberry represent the red berry delegation. There is no oak yet we are granted the delight of smokey complexity - adding to this is lavender, a smidge of liquorice and the Syrah staple - black pepper. Among the sunny fruit, a beacon of medium (+) acidity maintains freshness. Dry on the palate, the tannins manage to be medium (+), while also achieving approachable grip and smooth, heavy linen texture. Alcohol is medium as is body.  This Syrah celebrates fruit with understated complexity - did I mention the earthiness and smoked plums? The medium (+) finish is a fitting end to a wine with similarly potent flavour intensity.  • Samples gifted by @EmmaWellingsPR. Happy New Year! Although the 1975 La Violette en mag (not pictured), 1840 Marsala and 1945 Suduiraut were all terrific and true history in each glass- The 1992 Leflaive Clavoillon was the wine of the night for me. Kept building in complexity until the last sip. Thank you @englishmans_claret & @afh1486 for hosting us and for your wonderful friendship over the years.
