What a weekend in Citrusdal! We managed to check out an exclusive spot where no one has ever climbed before. Incredible sandstone bouldering, but this one specific line was an absolute mental battle.
Right near the top, one of the last grips completely broke loose from the boulder. In that split second, holding onto a detached piece of rock, pure adrenaline hit. All I could think was, “Shit, what about my son and his friend beneath me spotting?” I had to find a way to hold onto it just long enough to release it safely without crushing them, while somehow keeping myself on the wall.
I’m thanking the Lord for keeping us safe out there once again. I ended up naming the boulder “Near Death Experience.” I’m not sure on the grade yet, but it kicks off with a nice little dyno. An epic experience, but at the same time, it forced me to face a fear I’ve carried for a very long time. 🧗‍♂️😮‍💨🙌.

Revenge of the Gym Rats – 7c, Powerlines, Rocklands 🇿🇦

Amazing one-move boulder! Managed to climb this on my 5th attempt. I’d say it’s quite soft, especially for taller people, but nevertheless, such a fun climb.

One 7a-ish crimp move into a powerful 7b+ throw from the crimps, with an precise left heel hook. Wouldn’t have done it without the support and pads from our South African friends, huge thanks to you guys! 🙏 And thanks for inviting us to the braai! 🔥

Two more days in Rocklands before we head out to explore the Garden Route and do some sightseeing. 🌿🇿🇦

L’Arête — 7a+, Powerlines, Rocklands 🇿🇦🧗‍♂️

So far, the vacation has been great! We spent a couple of days sightseeing in Cape Town and have now arrived in Rocklands for some bouldering.

This was the first boulder I climbed on the trip, and I’ve already managed to tick off a couple of other nice climbs as well.

The temperature has risen quite a bit though, reaching 30+ °C, so we’re taking it a little easier for now and not climbing too much. ☀️🥵

Elefant im Porzellanladen, 7a (Highball), Rocklands 🇿🇦

After climbing “Black Slab”, @vanya.besh told me there was another high 7a nearby - not particularly difficult, but fun and perfect for a rest-day session.

This boulder felt quite different - around 10–12 meters high, not a slab, with the crux right at the beginning and relatively easy climbing on sharp jug-ish holds afterwards.

Huge thanks to my guys @bagrialexx , @vanya.besh & @jeanpaulshapo for the support and all the fun between the sessions. It was such a memorable trip, and I would definitely love to come back to South Africa again 🤞🇿🇦
