First time I saw someone get localized, Venice Break Water, Circa 1984: Even though I had been boogie boarding Suicides (RIP, those that know, know) from 11 to 12, then graduated to surfing the NS of the VBW since I wuz 13, I wuz still wide eyed & clueless to how things worked at the VBW at age 14, until this event took place… BRI (RIP): “Pick up a rock” Me: “Why? BRI (RIP): “To be down”… Seconds later someone says “NOW” & rocks are thrown at 2 guys we didn’t know who were walking up to the VBW not even expecting what’s about to happen to them, which made 3 of us because I had no idea what I wuz about to witness & be a part of. Right after the rocks are thrown Tonan runs down the sand bank that wuz going up the old VBWL wall currently the VSP, he stops 1 foot away from the guy & slams the rock hard into the guys brand new Channel Islands board, then Tonan & the guy start to fight & Tonan beats the guy to the ground, takes his board & beats it on the wet hard sand at low tide, the rock still stuck in the board, the guy’s bleeding from his nose & mouth, his new board destroyed, his friend never says a word & doesn’t jump in, they leave licking their wounds, the Lifeguards turned a blind eye to it because they had our backs like that. No surveillance cameras, no cell phones or cell phone cameras, no passive aggressive bitch made cop calling rats, just unwritten rulez that certain areas applied to their every day lifestyle in an era that wuz still rather lawless in its own ways. Even the 2 guys took it like men & didn’t call the cops, it wuz a different era where men were still men like that. That’s it, that’s the whole story. We went back to hanging out on the wall guarding our spot like the kids in Lord of the Flies & making up our own rulez with quick Kangaroo courts, judgement & sentences being handed down in a blink of an eye. After that day I wuz no longer wide eyed & understood what wuz going on from that day forward.
