this came straight from my dreams!!!!!!!!

Papier mache shell headpieces for goddesses Juno, Iris, Ceres.

I wanted all of the summoned goddesses to clearly be a fabrication of Prospero’s enchantments and illusions. One of the main motifs of my set/prop design work is the sea shell. This was the element that represented the magical island and Prospero’s powers.

Painted with scrap exchange house paint samples that provided the palette for all of the props and set pieces I made (someone had done an ocean themed project or was thinking about it? And I got like 15 tubs of perfect oceanic titled paint cans).

Iris and Ceres also had corresponding flags made from textiles from scrap exchange and my mom’s gf’s mom who had been saving me quilt scraps from her quilting circle. I found the flag poles on the curb between Nat/Red’s house as we were moving Red’s old bed frame to reclaim the wood for the set flats.

Other more obvious renditions of The Tempest costume Iris and Ceres with rainbow/peacock or with golden grain imagery. I remained true to this, but simplified the visuals to gently allude to this symbology (blue spiral plays with peacock colors and swirls, swirl of a rainbow, messages swirling through the ether // warm sun rays powering harvest, golden ethereal power).

The goddess Juno was introduced alongside a giant papier mache shell bearing the message ‘Love is Magic.’ This came of my need to include some outsider art messaging into the visual universe of the play and make it relevant to our current collective experience.

In this wedding/masque scene, Prospero is using his magic to put on a show to celebrate the marriage of his daughter to the Prince Ferdinand. Over the course of this story, we learn how hollow and nefarious the conjuring of magic (/other means)can be for personal gain and the assertion of power and dominance.

One of my personal takeaways from this narrative is that the true magic of this world is experienced through love and gentleness.

Cambria, Caroline, and Haley did an enthralling portrayal of the goddesses, and I am forever grateful to them and the whole cast/crew of for making this special scene a reality.

Thomas Dollbaum's album Birds of Paradise is easily one of my very favorites of 2026. Delighted to host his band on 4.1. Tickets on sale in one week via Eventbrite. Let's all be fools together!

BACKYARD BBQ (TODAY):
Tune in from 4-5pm to hear a live performance from fingerstyle guitarist Josh Kimbrough. We’ll chat with Josh afterwards about his upcoming show on 10/6 at The Fuzzy Needle with Libby Rodenbough (member of Sluice, Weirs, Fust, Mipso) and Paul Spring (of Holy Hive).

Josh released his debut, Slither, Soar & Disappear, in 2020 on Tompkins Square Records (LP issued by Worried Songs), earning praise from MOJO Magazine, Aquarium Drunkard, and UNCUT Magazine, among others. Since then, he’s collaborated with Australian composer Andrew Tuttle on the track Correlation and contributed to New Commute’s “New Commute Forever” compilation. And a new record is in the works. Josh’s playing brings to mind a host of artists: Jansch, Drake and Fahey, to the Penguin Café Orchestra and Mike Hurley.

Tune in on your radio 89.3 FM, or at wxyc.org, or with the wxyc app! 📻
