Hi sweet friends!
I’ve had a lot of questions from my DIY reel about how we “winterize our chicken coops”…specifically about our DIY heated (bottom mounted) hanging waterers (try to say that 5 times fast 😆).
I’ve tried multiple other options. We’ve used these for years & at this point, have trouble shooted it’s few quirks (which I’ve listed below). No waterer is likely fail proof at really cold temps, & this one is no different.
What you need:
👉🏻Electricity in your coop
👉🏻Food grade 5 gal bucket
👉🏻Pack of 4 poultry water nipples (screw in style)
👉🏻250 watt K&H stock tank de-icer (Amazon)
👉🏻Drill
👉🏻3/8 inch bit
👉🏻Sealant
How:
👉🏻Flip over the bucket & drill holes
👉🏻Screw in nipples
👉🏻Apply sealant to exterior nipple ring on the outside bottom of bucket
👉🏻Hang at desired height
👉🏻Drop in de-icer, pull cord through opening, & plug in
Tips-
👉🏻𝓐𝓵𝔀𝓪𝔂𝓼 keep de-icer completely submerged in water
👉🏻De-icer turns on when the water temp drops </= 32 degrees F
👉🏻The nipples will freeze overnight depending on how insulated your coop is, etc. For us, they freeze when temps drop below 5-10 degrees F
👉🏻Cup your hand over each nipple for 20 seconds to un-freeze them. Once the chickens start using them throughout the day, they typically don’t refreeze
👉🏻Nipples that drip constantly are clogged, which is a sign you need to empty the bucket, spray it out, and re-fill it
👉🏻Put a plastic pan on the floor below the bucket to catch any drips

We have so much happening on The Ridge this Spring!

We welcomed seven new chicks to the flock. It looks like a mix of silkie, naked neck and barnyard mix.

Eleven calves on the ground so far, with two more to come. We’ve had a very healthy, successful season so far!

We are expanding my vegetable garden to make room for a small cutting garden. 🌸🌺🌷🌻

And there’s a new therapy horse here for the STRIDE, Inc. program.

I can’t tell if the eagles successfully hatched any eaglets this year, but it’s been so cool watching them build the nest and prepare for them.

The fox and cranes have also come back for the summer. Life is thriving here on our little hill in Alaska, and I am loving every minute of it.
