Interview with @roger_white_

"I do wonder how different the situations really are in Europe and the United States. Perhaps the same processes of rediscovery, forgiveness, and renewed embrace are taking place, but at different speeds.

Here, painting seems undying, in much the same way that other once-hegemonic cultural forms, such as rock music or the novel, seem undying. And yet there is always this lingering anxiety, despite how thoroughly normalized painting has become at the institutional level — and, naturally, within the market. There does not seem to be much skepticism toward painting in American institutions anymore, outside of a few particularly scrupulous circles.

The question of whether painting can remain contemporary is certainly a valid one, but I do not think it can be answered beyond a certain level of generality. Perhaps it is the long shadow of Clement Greenberg that makes us want to worry about painting as a medium as a whole, and about what it is or is not doing in relation to its historical context. I mean, there are operas that feel extremely relevant to contemporary life, while sophisticated, AI-driven installations can seem hopelessly anachronistic when examined closely "
