Lives in east London

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A friend of mine went to see #naza today and we spoke briefly about it which meant the terrifying struggle of the Palestinian people has been weighing heavily on my heart this evening. So, I turned off the telly and reached for some poetry...and I swear, it was so odd, I had to share it. I opened the book randomly and fell upon this heartbreakingly beautiful poem, Flowers by @rogerhuddle taken from his gorgeous anthology, press one at any time. It moved me so much I've had to sit with it for a while to remind myself that I must accept: two opposites can coexist, that contrasting ideas can be true at the same time, that there are many flowers fighting to breathe in the open graveyard that is Gaza, that evil can and does exist in this world alongside beauty and kindness...

that Palestine MUST be FREED from Israeli GENOCIDE if it's the last thing we all do in this world...we cannot keep existing while such evil is taking place right in front of our eyes.

In 2014 I made a film. It was beginning of the end of many things and then the beginning a love affair with Walthamstow that I have never gotten over ❤️

A year after I moved to London, Richard C Bell and I won the Reel Walthamstow Scene Moving Image Commission. If @lizafletchere17 hadn’t believed in that film, I may have lived an entirely different life. Both Liza and @red.raw.reels are one of a kind. Their generosity, encouragement and belief in community, creativity and connection provided a solid foundation for the creative life I built in East London over the next decade.

Now dears, I’m coming home and it is time to throw a few parties. Everyday Stories of Colossal Importance… indeed.

Please please please come to Walthamstow Trades Hall on Sunday the 2nd of August from 3 – 6pm for a program of short films about E17. 🙏
E17 4RQ. I’d love to see some of my old students there ❤️ And, can someone please invite Richard?

Each screening will be introduced by the filmmaker, followed by a Q&A session. Come along, support local artists, and dive into contemporary life in E17.

📅 The Line-Up:
Fletch Fletcher – Various Films (10 mins, 2026)
Brutalist poet and experimental filmmaker Fletch invites us into his vision of future advertising, showcasing his latest brutalist campaigns for businesses in Walthamstow and beyond (whether they asked for them or not!).

Charlotte Bracegirdle – My Paper Bag Life (5 mins, 2026)
Recent winner of the Walthamstow International Film Festival 2026, Charlotte’s short film beautifully reveals life in Waltham Forest lived with a chronic illness and a hearty imagination.

Sarah Mace Dennis – Everyday Stories of Colossal Importance (20 mins, 2014)
Originally shown as one of the two films to open the Empire Cinema on Walthamstow High Street in 2014. Created with filmmaking partner Richard C Bell, the script was inspired by interviews with ordinary and extraordinary members of our community.

🎵 Plus: Dean Brannigan will be on the decks between the films, keeping things moving with some deep grooves.

⏱️ Event Details:
Date: Sunday 2nd August

Time: 3pm – 6pm

Cost: FREE

Venue: The Trades

Day1 of the @walthamstowarttrail was AMAZING! What an incredible range of artists and venues. Join me today and any day to 14 June to #banishthearttrailoverwhelm, meet wonderful people and be very inspired! I’ve curated a tour day from the 160+ venues so you don’t have to! 🖼️ See bio.

Yesterday we loved in order of visiting: @emmawoodcockphotography at @queensarmse17 (sorry to miss you and someone enquired how to buy them), @fromthedarkroomfrances prints - beautiful prints using vegetable dye , and talented @johnvincentart and @ellasr at @garage_gallery_e17 ; beautiful and fun knitted and crocheted animals and plants in the @howardroadhouse (always visible in the garden do pass by with the kids or just on your own it’s a delight!); a warm welcome as ever at @roseandcrownpub.e17 and a talk on his life of activism and art and @rockagainstracism by the legendary @rogerhuddle 😊 🚶

Wonderful @woodstreetwalls and @angrydan murals all through the route (I LOVE the @whoamirony mural at the Rose and Crown and the Hope mural nearby by @vasusell ).

Then on to the amazing @kirstenschmidtartist @alkeschmidtart where we met all the artists plus a new to me @harriottknuckles who moved from construction to sculptural knitting and @kristin.erken (loved your painting in a washing machine panel @no70hoest

Back to @lbwalthamforest library where @reziawahid1 and @paultuckerstudio have an exhibition - Oh the weaving talent! Oh the beautiful photographs!

Then… on to the Preview Night parties at @winns_gallery and saw the brilliant work of @huddlelorraine @andreahumphries3 and Linda Green amongst others with the new Mayor @walthamstowhighstreet no less!

Then… (yes there’s more) intro-ing the mayor to the North Hoe St creatives, and finished the night at @switchboardstudiose17 which was mobbed and had so many artists I can’t list them but am taking a tour today to meet with the talented @lou_madhu and @lsmertens .

Phew what a day! Only 9 more to go!
Every tour starts at 1pm by the postboxes outside Walthamstow Central Library. Join me! Today we’re doing the @blackhorsebeermile seeing SOOO many artists I can’t list them but it’s going to be AMAZI

#BanishTheArtTrailOverwhelm!

Hoorah! You don’t have to work out which of the 160+ venues on the @walthamstowarttrail are open on the days that you’re free because I’ve done it for you! 🖼️

You can thank me later - at the end of your personally curated tour 😍. It was HARD! Even ChatGPT gave up. But I persevered.

All you have to do is choose a day (or a few) from Fri 5-Sun 14 June, turn up at Walthamstow Library at 1pm, and drop me an email to tell me you’re coming ASAP to secure your place. Bookings@ Goodlifetours.org

And check my website for the routes (rewatching this video to work it out is not the best system…) 😜
