When I was in my freshman year of high school, I wrote myself a letter, addressed to a future me. The letter reads (as optimistic and idealistic as 13 year old girls could be), “Kiémi, believe in your gifts. You might not go to Harvard now, but you will go to Harvard one day!”. 12 years after writing that letter, I am a Harvard Law School graduate.

For me, the privilege of attending Harvard Law School has been rooted in the extremely rich opportunities for me to learn about and use the law in ways to develop my personal power and to empower others. The language of the law is a vocabulary that deepened my understanding and scrutiny of the world around me. It has completely and utterly reframed the way that I see the world, for education is wealth, knowledge is power.

Yet despite this privilege, despite the culture of legal profession of uniformity, conformity, rigidity etc, and despite the pressures to forget who you are, why you are, and what you were made for, I have persevered through this experience and come out on the other side with stronger sense of self and purpose than I had before it.

To my Nana and Tante Ree, who planted seeds by buying me books, and puzzles, and signing me up for Sylvan Learning Center when I was struggling with writing and geometry. I would say I wish you were both here to see what I’ve done and who I’m becoming. But I know you both have sat next to me on every exam, every late night, every scary moment you have helped carry me as my angels. Gratitude. Gratitude.

To my mother, who introduced me to the law in its most unfiltered and real form so that I could truly become a lawyer who is authentically me, balanced, and a talented advocate. Mommy, I watched you be the best criminal defense trial attorney while being a mother who made every resource available to me so that I could flourish. Thank you. Gratitude, gratitude.

To my village of family, friends, soul mates, sprit guides etc thank you for providing me with the support for me to be who I am and thank you for believing in the dream. Gratitude.

There is so much to say but what is done is done!!! 👩🏾‍🎓❤️
