🚁 helicopter pilot training and tours over LA & OC
📍John Wayne Airport & Long Beach Airport

steep approach to my old friend pad 3🌲these approaches simulate landing over an obstacle or in confined areas, and have (as you can see!) a more dramatic approach angle. these are super fun and definitely work the refinement skills. in an airplane, this is what it looks like right before you go around 🫠 but the magic of helicopters lets us land like this, and as usual, i can’t wait for the next lesson!

governor off landing practice ✅
so exciting to get out of the comfort zone and learn more! when the governor is working, it automatically maintains engine and rotor rpm within the green. With the governor off, it is up to the pilot to adjust the throttle on the collective and keep engine rpm in the green. While not an emergency (and Robinson says you can continue flight with a governor inoperable, but you shouldn’t start one with it inop) it is something we need to train for! As I learned, and as is so true across aviation, the key is to be ~smooth~

softest running landing yet! featuring only two mentions of pushing forward, scaring one beetle that was determined to stay on pad 3, and some more fun flying 🚁 happy to be getting better and way less freaked out by these landings!

starting the ✨scary stuff✨ just in time for spooky season 🚁 first time practicing low rotor rpms and recovery which in the end actually wasn’t that scary at all! as my cfi has drilled many times, rpms are life, so it did feel uncomfortable to deliberately lower them, but it is all part of the learning process. pumped to be progressing more!

landing back at the ramp in the r22 🚁 steady improvements! from engine start to shutdown there really is no “down” time in helicopter flying like there is in airplanes. being able to take us through every minute of the flight, and for every minute to be high focus, has been a great milestone to reach!

more running landing practice! even though it feels way less scary, it still feels uncomfortable and unnatural. i’m getting way better at anticipating when the skids will touch, so that part at least is less surprising. excited to keep working on these and to move on to the next task 🚁

practicing a normal landing to pad 3 at lgb! 🚁 this was the first one of the day and one of my best yet! with gaps between lessons i sometimes find my confidence dipping between flights, and i wonder if i’ll even remember what we worked on last time. this was the perfect way to start off the lesson :’) and a reminder that even though i’m not able to fly as often as i’d like (every day lol) i’m still making progress and solidifying skills!

also, this was the first lesson with basically no consistent wind, and it felt so different! the cooler air made a big and noticeable difference too, even with two of us and a bunch of fuel. as usual, tysm for the excellent instruction @johnalvarado80 and @rogueaviation and i can’t wait for my next lesson!

i wonder if my bad landing is still thinking about me 🥲 well this was not my best work ever, started the set down with backward motion but quickly corrected by adding in some power and getting back to a hover. went to set down again and touched down a little harder than usual but not too bad. gotta have the imperfect moments to get better! and thankfully i redeemed myself later in the flight 🚁
