Public Service Announcement:
I just want to say thank you to everyone who supports me and my friends in what we are doing with our photos, art, words, and the history and story we are telling. I appreciate that you all appreciate it.

Look where I grew up and the era I grew up in I was the youngest of the guys taking photos, and when you’re the youngest you get the most disregarded. I didn’t take photos to make a living, I took them for the passion of it, to document my world first hand. Compliments were non existent for me back then. I sent some photos to a couple mags back then and nothing ever came of it. Any shots I got in the mags was because people made that happen not the mag itself, ads and things like that. I wasn’t a part of that world, my world was Venice and that was it.

I am extremely thankful that my photos weren’t known back then, that decades later it caught many by surprise that I was sitting on the photos that I do have. I went many years not even looking at any of them, they just sat as memories from my younger years that I wanted to keep as personal thoughts through photos. My photos have really only been noticed for maybe 10 years now and really started taking off only in the past 5 years. But I’m grateful that it has happened this way. They take on a meaning that they wouldn’t have decades ago. I appreciate that people see them as historical and they see the story being told and not just as a skate shot or a shot of people hanging out. There was no game plan to have it work out this way, it just happened organically. Same with lot of my friends art, we seem to be getting all the cool stuff happening on the back end of life and it’s definitely much more satisfying that way. My friends and I are having fun with it, and it’s therapeutic in a way. My photos are old but the photo / art world and the business of it all is extremely new to me and most of us. We are getting great advice, making connections, and playing it all by ear and just going with the flow.

this weekend, was one for the books. alot of great skateboarding went down, volunteers driving in from all over, so much food & most importantly- alot of good times were had. these folks really know how to live life down here, man. yesterday, I met a really nice woman at the chili cook-off, and started chatting about desserts. not even 20 minutes later, I’m skating outside & she walks a gentleman up to me, “hey, I hear you’re a Chef.. I have a bunch of comedy shows, and private parties. here’s my card..” 20 min later, I’m sitting at the same spot. another woman walks up, “I hear one of you guys is a Chef? I just opened a coffee shop, and have an open kitchen after 2pm. actually, if you guys wanna bring the ramps, and do a dinner..” few minutes later, @_aaron_jewett_ introduces me to a gentleman who owns a catering business, and does real estate. wants to talk about a upcoming farmers market, and get me into a place down here. look. you don’t have to believe in fate. but, I know when the universe is telling me where I need to be. Eric D sighting:
In the late ‘80’z I was hanging out by the old quarter pipe and a kid younger than me came up to me and said “Can I have your autograph?”. I had no idea why he would’ve asked me that so I said “Who do you think I am?”. His reply, “Eric Dressen”. I laughed and explained to him that I wasn’t Eric. The kid looked at me so bummed out. He asked for the autograph again and was looking at my wide eyed. I stopped for a second and thought “I’m on an Eric D board, I have a backwards baseball hat on, I’m wearing an XL shirt that is way too big on me, I have on big baggy shorts, and I’m short in stature”, I get why he thinks I’m him. So I tell the kid “Come with me”, and I took him down the street to Eric D’s old pad and introduced him to Eric. The kid looked so confused, but he was even more wide eyed when he saw that Eric was Eric and I was just some guy in baggy cloths with a backwards hat ridding an Eric D deck. He got the autograph he wanted, he finally knew I wasn’t lying to him, and he was so stoked on meeting his favorite skater. We went back down to the ramp and said to the kid “I guess I could have taken a run on the ramp and you would have seen that I’m definitely not Eric D from my skating” followed by me laughing really hard at my own statement.

Nick “TAME / NWOOD” Bradley:

The other day I found more negatives in between old surf mags. One of the strips was from a night I shot at MCO, on it was this photo. I couldn’t believe that I had a skate shot of TAME, it’s an extremely rare thing to have! This photo sums it up perfectly, he loves being behind the scenes, but every now and then he takes center stage, and rightly so.

You want to talk about a humble unsung hero, Nick Bradley @pov_of_nickb would be that person. His old tags / hit ups (TAME TNG / NWOOD CTB) are in at least 70% of my photos. He got into dumb shit with the rest of us growing up. He’s had his fair share of life throwing him fucked up curve balls, and yet he’s kept positive through it all. He’s one of the most rational friends that I have. He’s the friend that answers the phone on the first ring or calls back the second that he can, he’s a stand up man like that. Nick is an incredibly unselfish friend to all of us.

His dad Rod is a legendary Venice Photographer, who like Nick is very humble. That makes Nick a legacy, and for as much as he downplays his photography, he shouldn’t, his eye and perspective are as good as it gets, incredible is a gross understatement. He’s taken photos that should be deemed instantly iconic, especially his political photos. He loves his job and works endless hours perfecting tv shows for the world to watch. He has a company called Golden Era Collective @goldeneracollective , and one day it’ll launch in a big way, he has great ideas, just remember that name and that it’s been said.

A pile of gold & a lump of coal:

Last Monday (12/7/2020) I was cleaning and re-organizing my room. In that journey I came across two more undeveloped rolls of film. One color and one black & white. I could tell by the lettering on the canisters that they were anywhere from 25 to over 30 years old. The next day I took them to get developed, and it was the longest week of anticipation waiting for the final product to come in.

This week I picked them up. The lump of coal was the color roll from 1995. Only 6 photos came out, the roll was pretty much ruined, the film was damaged. The shots were of my old dog and the view out of the Shangri La window up in Zuma. The pile of gold was in the black & whites, the whole roll came out perfect, plus no damage to the film. It was a roll I had shot in 1988 on the beach in the Palisades, later that day that ramp moved to Ricky Massie’s pad in Venice where it stayed for a good while. I’ve posted about this ramp before from another roll of film that I had shot that same day, from a roll that I found three years ago sitting in my closet. But this roll came out much better. For 32 years that roll sat under a pile of old surf mags never seeing the light of day.

I want to thank my incredible girlfriend Charlene who bought me two new dresser drawers, which led me to clean out and re-organize my room, which led to me discovering more lost gold. I also found more negatives that I thought I had lost that were sitting in between old surf mags as well. I scanned all of them this past week. If it hadn’t been for Charlene getting me the new dressers everything I found probably would have sat around and gone undiscovered for another 32 years.
