Join us Wednesday, October 21 at 6:30PM in Montclair for an exclusive wine dinner featuring Château La Nerthe, one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s oldest and most historic organic wine estates.

Sommelier Philippe Marchal has carefully selected each wine to accompany a four-course menu curated by Chef Olivier Muller, with special guest Roman Aujoulat of Château La Nerthe joining us for the evening.

I've heard many people try to pronounce this and then suddenly just give up because they don't know how... so they end up choosing a wine they can pronounce instead.

Red Chateauneuf du Pape is a wine that is allowed to use 13 (or 18 depending on who you ask) different grape varieties but mostly made from Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre.

The name directly translates to "new castle of the Pope" owing it's name to the time when the center of papacy was in Avignon in France.

Most people don’t realise Châteauneuf-du-Pape makes white wine.

Around 95% of production is red, which makes the whites one of the region’s quieter stories, but historically, some estates actually began with white before shifting toward the reds we recognise today.

White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is typically built around grapes like Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc, creating wines that are aromatic, textured and expressive of the southern Rhône landscape.

It’s a different side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that more people are starting to explore.

A Roman amphitheatre… and a sealed WWII cellar.

One of the lesser-known stories from Château La Nerthe sits quietly beneath the surface.

When the Richard family purchased the estate in 1995, they uncovered something unexpected in the cellars: three tanks built using stones taken centuries earlier from a nearby Roman amphitheatre. That wasn’t the only discovery.

During World War II, part of the cellar had been sealed off to protect the wines while German forces were stationed at the estate. When it was finally reopened decades later, bottles were still waiting inside.

It’s a reminder that in regions like Châteauneuf-du-Pape is so rich in history, stories and surprises.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape might be the last family-run stronghold in French wine.

Unlike many famous regions that now include major luxury groups or corporate ownership, this appellation is still shaped largely by growers, around 330 families across roughly 3,300 hectares.

That creates something pretty rare in the modern wine world: real diversity of soils, approaches, and styles living inside one historic region Add to that the presence of 18 permitted grape varieties, and you start to see why Châteauneuf-du-Pape can taste so different from one producer to the next, even though Grenache still makes up around 75% of plantings.

It’s a region with strong identity, but also surprising variation.
