2024 in rocks 🧗🏻‍♀️ Returning from a wee break from socials with some reflections on the year. Time flies by so fast and if you’re anything like me it can be easy to forget a lot of the special moments held within a year. I don’t share a lot of my rock climbing here - because it’s something I largely keep for myself - but it is the thing in the world I love to do the most. The thing that makes me feel the most like me. Amongst busy work, family life and a s**t Scottish summer it felt like time on rock has been lacking this year. So, it was lovely to take a moment to look back and be reminded that there have still been plenty of special memories banked. 📸 1/2 Cragging in Northern Italy. This was a big deal for us because it was the first time we realised Alina is big enough that we could climb as a 3 with no extra adults and she could be trusted not to run away 😅 and take the pictures! 📸 3, a few days away just me & Si. Looking for the shady side of the valley in Val Pennaire. Well recommended if you like steep techy limestone! 📸 4/5 stealing some climbs between showers with pals in the forests of Frakenjura 📸 6 type one fun swinging leads at a local crag 📸 7 type two fun swinging leads at a local crag, I cannot recommend this route unless you like run out, terrifying slabs! 📸 8 Ardveikie Wall on Binnein Shuas, a local classic that I’ve waited years for an opportunity to do and it didn’t disappoint. 📸 9 Alina’s first ‘mountaineering’ route. A great scramble to the summit of Meall Cumhann in Glen Nevis. 📸 10 Back at Kinguisse and really happy to be comfortable leading into the E’s again, it only took 5 years post partum to really get my body back!! 📸 11/12 A mega family day climbing Ben Nevis via Ledge Route as a family. I was so so proud of Alina for this one, and I’m very excited for where this summer will take us 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 📸 13 bumbling about Dartmoor with pals 📸 14/15 epic Devon sea cliffs enjoyed solo & roped 📸 16 just happiest having about above the trees 💜 I’ve got big ambitions for 2025 climbing adventures 🤞🏻they fall into place. #climbingismypassion #rockclimbinglife #tradisrad #tradclimbing #myadventure

Sands of Time 🏜🧗🏻‍♀️🌳⠀ ⠀ The last overseas stop on our trip was a wonderful few days exploring the Palatinate Forest, or Pfalz to locals. ⠀ ⠀ The landscape here is a beautiful combination of pine and broadleaf woodland. The trees stand on a bedrock of red sandstone that makes itself known in hill top clearings. Sculpted towers reach above the tree canopy, beacons of time gone by. ⠀ ⠀ The story of these rocks begins over 200 million years ago. The land that now makes up Europe was much closer to the equator and part of a giant supercontinent called Pangea. A depression in the land gathered sediments from miles around and a great desert was formed. The hot dry climate made perfect conditions to create the rich reds, oranges and purple colours which characterise this sandstone. ⠀ ⠀ Intermittent flash floods brought pebbles and larger debris creating varied layers. The desert heat rapidly dried any water, leaving cracks and weaknesses. Features that today make perfect climbing holds.⠀ ⠀ As time passed the sandstone was covered in other rock layers. Weighed down for millions of years it became compact and tough. Laying peacefully until the shifting plates brought it to the surface once more. ⠀ ⠀ Fast forward to a mere 5 million years ago and the story enters its latest chapter. Ice age glaciers sculpting and shaping the land, removing all but the strongest rock. The remains which form the towers we see today. The forest springing up on the fertile soils left behind as the ice retreated.⠀ ⠀ You don’t have to be an expert but knowing just a little can transform how you experience a place. ⠀ ⠀ As I move over the rock I notice the patterns and feel the grains of sand rough beneath my hands. I think of all the time that has passed to get to this point. I think of how I am now a tiny part of this story and that we are privileged to have such playgrounds created by nature many moons ago. ⠀ ⠀ A deep sense of satisfaction comes from the opportunity to connect with this place. Made all the more special by sharing it with my family and dear friend Kai. ⠀ ⠀ Instructions for living a life:⠀ Pay attention.⠀ Be astonished.⠀ Tell about it.⠀ ⠀ - Mary Oliver ⠀ ⠀
