i was walking home from the metro, knowing that i was performing this little ritual for the last time. i walked as slowly as i possibly could, greedily taking in the air, trying to absorb every bit of that moment. after two years of living on Vasilievsky Island, these views had become home to me — it was hard to imagine that tomorrow i would be on a train to Moscow with no return ticket in my pocket. even harder was the thought that this was my last night here, my last yoga practice, the last time i would step into my favorite little shop on the corner, the last time i would walk through my favorite courtyard. once again, tears began to well up in my eyes. i don’t think i had ever been this scared before. every step felt like a step into nowhere, into an endless abyss of uncertainty, and there was no turning back. it’s hard to believe that four years in Petersburg passed by in what feels like a single moment. four years ago, i arrived here without knowing how profoundly my life was about to change. how much would happen to me, how many people i would meet along the way, how many new things i would discover — both within myself and in the world around me. i love Petersburg unconditionally. →→→→→ i love it with all my heart, with every cell of my body, and there is no city in the world that feels closer to me. there are so many places there that i can confidently call my own: the little pier on the Obvodny Canal, the hidden corner of the beach in Zelenogorsk, Wolee’s little shop on Gorokhovaya with the kindest people in the world, our little spot on Baskov Lane — the place where Angelina and i had our monthly meetings, Ossu on Nekrasova with the best noodles i have ever had, Betancourt Bridge, where i used to rest on the steps after my runs, Civil on Volynsky Lane with my favorite turkey sandwich, the Karpovka embankment where i once read Akhmatova out loud, Co-Op Garage with its wonderful summer terrace and the best pizza, and St. Isaac’s Cathedral, which i saw every day on my way out of university. i could keep going with this list for a very long time. no other city in the world holds so much of me. no other place carries so many memories, so many happy and

evening solace by charlotte brontë the human heart has hidden treasures, in secret kept, in silence sealed — the thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures, whose charms were broken if revealed. and days may pass in gay confusion, and nights in rosy riot fly, while, lost in Fame’s or Wealth’s illusion, the memory of the Past may die. but there are hours of lonely musing, such as in evening silence come, when, soft as birds their pinions closing, the heart’s best feelings gather home. then in our souls there seems to languish a tender grief that is not woe; and thoughts that once wrung groans of anguish now cause but some mild tears to flow. and feelings, once as strong as passions, float softly back — a faded dream; our own sharp griefs and wild sensations, the tale of others’ sufferings seem. oh! when the heart is freshly bleeding, how longs it for that time to be, when, through the mist of years receding, its woes but live in reverie! and it can dwell on moonlight glimmer, on evening shade and loneliness; and, while the sky grows dim and dimmer, feel no untold and strange distress — only a deeper impulse given by lonely hour and darkened room, to solemn thoughts that soar to heaven seeking a life and world to come.
