Birthday barbecue from over the weekend. It was a crazy day full of amazing people, but I did learn a few things

1. Reserving a grill is an absolute must, but reserving the grill does not stop the person who didn’t reserve the grill from fully picking up the picnic table and dragging it away, leaving you tableless.

2. You can use Uber to deliver a folding table.

📣 FACULTY ANNOUNCEMENT 📣

Roma Panganiban began her publishing career at The Gernert Company before moving to Janklow & Nesbit in 2019, where she began representing literary and upmarket fiction and nonfiction across the adult and children’s markets. She joined the Azantian Literary Agency in 2025 to continue championing fresh, unexpected perspectives, particularly those of writers from underrepresented communities.

Her taste leans literary, but she is open to fiction that incorporates genre elements, as well as work that defies categorization altogether. She is interested in narrative nonfiction that reorients our understanding of history, culture, science, society, and ourselves, and creative nonfiction that appeals equally to the heart, mind, and sense of humor.

Roma is a member of the American Association of Literary Agents (AALA). She lives in Brooklyn.

On May 5, Vincent Yu launched his debut novel, Seek Immediate Shelter (@flatiron_books), at the Atlantic Avenue Barnes & Noble in Brooklyn. Last night, in a wood-paneled room overlooking the Statue of Liberty from the 25th floor, OA writers and supporters gathered for our annual "Stories & Strangers" soirée — celebrating stories that transport and strangers who enchant. We raised glasses of bubbly, choked up retracing OA’s origins, and shared the far-flung locales we'd all come from (including South Africa, Canada, the UK, the Bay Area, Chicago, and more!). We were treated to a reading by our very first contributor, Leslie Jamison, and were hypnotized by Pier Nirandara's (@piersgreatperhaps) award-winning “Letter to a Stranger” essay. On the cusp of our 10-year anniversary, we also couldn't help but look ahead to the next ten years—as our magazine grows and our community expands, we can’t wait to gather in person more often and celebrate literature, place writing, and strangers around the globe. 📸: @i_chase_pigeons

QUERYING IS LESS SOUL CRUSHING FACE TO FACE (SOMEHOW).

I'll probably do a reel about it, but I've never heard querying who regrets doing a face to face pitch for their novel, or getting a professional critique by an insider on their genre.

If you live in Maryland (or near the train line on the East Coast) These are some of the literary agents or editor profiles who are open to pitches at the #BrainsToBookshelf Conference on Oct 11-12, 2025. Link in bio, limited availability for critiques especially, but we have all major genres covered at the conference.

I'll be there the whole weekend volunteering with the pitch booth, and enjoying a glass of wine at the open mic. Not sure if I have the courage to do a READING at the open mic yet.... ironically. Somehow doing reels for hundreds of y'all doesn't seem weird, but reading for a room of 50 people seems terrifying.

QOTD (autocomplete) - Would you have the courage to do a poetry reading in front of a crowd?

If you’re querying, or know anyone who is, you know it’s soul crushing. Low odds, a ton of competition, and it’s difficult to express what is unique about your book in a short paragraph (especially in speculative, I think). In ten minutes? You can get further. If you know other authors who might be querying, I’d appreciate any reposts! I’d love to share a drink with some strangers at the Open Mic, and I volunteer here every year.

I’ll be sharing more about the agents who will be attending the Maryland Writer’s Association Brains to Bookshelf Conference on Oct 11 to 12 over the next few days. The conference link is in my bio.

Critique slots are limited, so if you want an agent critique, REGISTER FAST.

Hope to see some of you there! There’s a cheap train from NYC and Philly and a shuttle to the hotel.

FLORENZER IS A NATIONAL BESTSELLER!!!

It is a very strange thing to see something that began in a Florence hotel room as ITNOGAP.doc become this hardcover book that readers are finding—and hopefully finding interesting—across the U.S.

One writes a book alone, but getting it into the world is a team effort. Thank you to the dream team of @ginaiaquinta , @cmluibl , @romapancake & Clio (as well Nick, Maria & everyone at @liverightbooks & @janklownesbit who aren’t pictured but certainly were essential) + extra loud shout-out to all the booksellers out there for helping to make this happen.
